OK. I'll take the Cadillac, please. With the first auto for me in over 40 years.

Thanks.

Oh, right. Time for an IS-F test ride as well, since they now seem to be on a performance par with the bimmer.

It could perform circles around the M3 and I still wouldn't be interested because of the slush-box auto. I didn't even bother test driving the IS-F or C63 because of that reason alone. The performance benefits of DCT wasn't enough to persuade me to go that route. I even thought hard about the GTR, but couldn't get passed the fact that there was no manual tranny option.

I might be open to giving DCT (or whatever other brand equivalent) a shot sometime in the future, but I'm still having too much fun with manuals.

You do know that the CTS-V comes standard with a 6 speed MANUAL tranny...

Yea I'm not talking about the CTS-V. That car is off the list because I think it's one of the uglier cars on the road. I can't stand caddy styling at all, but that's just my personal opinion. I know a lot of people like the angled styling.

The IS-F doesn't look like it's anything special, the AMG isn't really my style on the interior, and the CTS-V supposedly has a terrible manumatic (a must), so I haven't really given them much thought. Are any of these cars really competitive on an all around (handling, power, transmission, interior) basis that they are good competition for the M3 (or S4, for that matter)?
If the dealers won't let you test drive them or test drive them in any extensive way, you obviously won't be able to make apples to apples comparison.

Before my 2008 M3, test drive C63 and IS-F and they'd only let me putter around a block. But, I was able to take the M3 on a 30 minute drive, onto the freeway, etc. Needless to say, took the M3 home that day. Didn't even bother with test drives with 2011 M3.

That's how I was a few years ago. Now I have a C63 and I haven't minded the transmission too much.

this is true of the 2012 refreshed car, but not previously. It has a traditional slushbox through 2011.

Yes, it's still an automatic at its core, but it's about as good as an actual slushbox gets imo.
I have an 09 335i and a 2011 M3 M-DCT. The steptronic is NOWHERE NEAR as responsive as M-DCT, very obviously a different transmission. Agreed that the 335i is about as good as they get, but DCT is just way better.

I think you should definitely test drive the others, this is a big purchase and you'll probably want to know that the M was your definite choice... which it probably will be!

Test drive them all!! I have driven 2 cts v coupes and it's fast beautiful, very luxurious, but I'm coming out of a luxury car and I also have a cts right now. It looks like the same car on the inside excluding the piano black trim and the recaro seats. But the dash looks the same, key looks the same, and I don't want to feel like I'm in the same car all over again. Buts a blast to drive, sounds great, but me personally at this moment prefer the M. Nevertheless you should still drive it. Buying or leasing a 70k vehicle is a Big decision to make.

i hate going to the dealers, often they dont want you to test drive the car, or they think theyre doing you a favor if they do. Then there are the over eager guys, like this one dealer who was egging me on to floor a new M3 with 2 miles on it!?!? I actually refused but thats not cool, thats gonna be someones car and its gonna be punished before its broken in.

I drove the isf, it was nice and torquey in city driving but on the highway it stopped hauling ass in the upper band of the rpm range. Kinda like power cut off and died up there. Also the computer controlled handling made the ride just too artificial. Basically Lexus has to use technology and computer assist to make the car handle close enough to be on par with a BMW. Inside also cramped and small.

C63 I had no interest. It's a 4 door, like the isf and u see so many c300s on the road no one would even know the diff. Plus none of my local dealers had one at the time I was considering a purchase so it's their loss I guess.

Ctsv: I have no desire to own GM stock, ive been shorting it since 2008....why would i even purchase one of their cars? But that's just me.

Off topic, but what happens when you short a stock that drops to zero? Don't you have to buy it before the company completely goes BK to complete your round trip on a short?
