Oil topping up

I'm having to add a litre every (approx) 4,500 miles.

Just wondered if this is common/normal?

Don't worry its completely normal. Just add the litre every time it asks for it. Mines about every 1,500 - 2,000 depending on hard I drive it, the harder the more oil it uses.

These engines need working, so get your foot down, 4,500 is way to long

Mine used a litre in the first 1000 miles and then it went in for the 1200 service.

I purchased 4 litres from Opie, expecting to top up regularly but in the next 8,000 miles I don't even think it's needed 0.5 litre!

Even after my 1600 miles around France the other week at sustained motorway speeds, the thing hasn't used a drop.

PS; Marcus, you KNOW how hard my motor gets driven

Weird, as I know a few others that regularly get through a litre every 2 or 3k? Wonder wether its a manual thing then

I also read somewhere that the less you use the car the more oil it gets through, maybe thats the case with me as I only do around 100 miles a week in mine?

I've read it takes up to 12,000 miles for the engine (in particular the piston rings) to fully bed in...sounds strange but mine used oil early on in its life but now hardly a drop @ 20k miles so maybe its true!

I do less miles than you and haven't needed to top up since purchase back in May. The oil level has always stated it's too high but is actually fine as per BMW M technician so my engine hasn't used much oil at all.

The oil breaks down every time from cold starts and get's more contaminated with fuel. Would the engine burn more oil if it was thinner?

Mine was on 20k miles when I bought it a month ago, I've added another 2500 miles and the oil level indicator in i-drive says half way between min/max so I'm happy that the oil consumption is ok.

Is the i-drive oil level accurate?
(i.e. is the actual oil level half way between min/max?)

Thanks

I hope so as it's the only way of checking it!

A right royal pain in the ass if you ask me, lol - much prefer a dipstick with the car on level ground. If you start the car and leave the engine running it takes mine about 20 mins of ticking over before it shows an oil level.

check for leakage around the oil filler area. BMW were supplying a duff seal on the oil cap for a while.

Works well for me. I always keep a litre bottle in the boot, when the message comes up to add a litre, I stick it in straight away

Yep got a litre in the boot and will add when it tells me to.........I'm just an old fashioned engineer who likes to dip engine oil levels regularly and it feels strange trust a computer to do it for me.
