has anyone noticed that the M division is using more carbon fiber than before (and more than most other car makers?) My guess is they will find ways to make CF affordable to manufacture and use it to drop weight on these cars.

Then a 6 turbo, lightweight M3 = 8 cyl

There is so much time between now and when the F30 M3 comes out...I think any news out about it now should be taken with a grain of salt.

That said, I will happily purchase a TT I6 M3 to replace my 335i. FI just seems better for sporty daily drivers...not so much for track.

It's definitely the right time to purchase an e90/e92/e93 M3 if you have the funds.

The current M3 will be a piece of history when the new M3 comes out because it is the only M3 that came with a V8 engine.

S65 all the way!

well, the next m3 will have more balls than the e9x. So there could be 8cyl turbo. Rumors are rumors but the fact is that the next m will be faster Iam hoping for 480hp+ and 12.1 in 1/4 mile.

The point of an M engine is not the outright power it has but the way it delivers it!

Anyone can make a N54 or N55 engine powerful with a simple tune and some breathing enhancements.

The difference in M engines is a big part of what has made BMW M cars so special in the past!

Not only that how is a modded N55 engine going to sound compared to the glorious notes of the M S6 V8 & V10 engines?

This.

Well, at least the children who are obsessed with nothing but peak torque and enormous pounds of boost will be pleased.

The new M3 will definitely accelerate surprisingly quick but using these engines based *heavily* off the existing Non-M engines seems to take away from the lure of an ///M vehicle

Hmmm... now that I have my E92 V8 running just the way I like it, I would find it hard to go back to a I6 turbo.I guess there would need to be some great exterior/interior changes to make me want to give up my current M3. I would hope that it would produce more power/torque than my 2007 335.

The 335i and 135i have proven themselves to be a great piece of engineering. It will be interesting to see how BMW can either improve the engine or make another work of art.

turbos are fun, but a high revving naturally aspirated V8 kicks ass

I'm guessing 1M (or whatever) will be 335is-like engine, just a tad more power stock and all the handling bells and whistles (edit:just read it's the twin turbo, so I guess not). For the M3, hopefully it's just "N55 inspired". I'm thinking larger displacement six cylinder, and they'll make it higher revving (which might be tricky with the turbo). I certainly hope it's not just a mod to N55 that any shop can do.

I love this car and I love this engine!!! Just spent two days at the track and this engine is so smooth you can steer with it!!! 8400 redline ( or higher) on a v8 was pure joy. Plus two days of 90+ heat and oil temp never above 245... Might be hard to replicate the that with the turbo, know that might be more track specific, but then again, that's why I bot an M and not an AMG...

I think had the new CAFE hysteria not hit the streets in the last couple of years, the next M3 would be sporting the 4.4L in the GTS. But now that the V8 M3 is gone and the 4 door is out for the next gen, this will likely be my last M3 for a very long time. Guess I better hold on to it.

time will tell. But to those hardcore BMW "enthusiasts" time is against us. I remember distinctly having a conversation with a buddy of mine about turbos. I assumed then, which was about 6 years ago, that most manufacturers will begin using turbos. He disagreed. Sure enough, more and more manufacturers are stepping away from NA engines and using turbos. Guess I was right.
