Gas Prices and the Future...

I had a good chat with my sales guy over me ordering the M3 E9X and instead of selling me on the car-he thankfully played Devil's advocate..

There is a very real possibility that we will see $4-6 per gallons in the immediate future which made me reconsider the investment/ownership proposition of the car....

Considering the most we can squeeze out of the E9X M3's is 22mpg (on a very, very good day)...what does the future hold for these cars especially in the resale aspect of it when gas hits north of $4 a gallon soon? If gas becomes too expensive-will the residual value of these cars tank further?

As a side note-My current E46 M3 (also a DD) recently averaged 31mpg on a a recent drive from DC to Philly. Avg speed 62 mph. The aforementioned Q applies to those of us considering the E9X M3 as a DD and not as a weekend toy.

So much for financing the car....leasing seems like the sound decision then.

In 2008 we had $4 a gallon gas. I bought my car at that time and it was fine. At the end of the year it's only a few hundred dollars difference and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

yeah.. I think we have less to worry about gas than the british... they already had nearly $10 a gallon now.. who knows how much more it could be.

BMW should have brought their entire line of diesel to the States. So we can have turbo diesel 4 as daily and drive m3 for fun.

As guilty as I feel driving alone in my car getting something slightly less than 20 mpg, the car is worth it to me and luckily I can afford the cost of fuel. I miss the fuel economy of the e46 M3, though.

I can always drive the TDI Jetta when I start to feel too guilty. And yet, I continue to drive the M3. Even if fuel goes to $5 per gallon, I'm sure I'll continue to climb into the M3 for the majority of mornings.

I don't know the residuals and money factor for January, but in Dec it was amazing.

I did the math, and it came out cheaper to lease than to finance and sell (I personally never keep cars for a long time)

I remember it came out to $967/month if I did a finance at 2.9% (purchase price of 83k, and assuming the car is worth 56k in 3 years, using 09 e93s as reference) versus a 36 month lease, where the lease came out to 811/month
I think the967 was cheap considering that in 3 years the new m3 will be out, so the cars would depreciate even more.. bringing up the total cost, probably to over 1100/month

But I don't feel like breaking it all down..

And $4/gallon isn't scary

I just paid about 3.6 the other day. Close enough.

Nothing will happen, life goes on. Gas prices will go up; enthusiasts will still buy V8 and V10 whenever available and spend the money on gas just like ALWAYS.
I remember when the gallon was 95c (I only came to the US in 1996) and people were pissed cause the gas prices are going up and discussing the same topic on lunch breaks. Fast forward 15 years later, we are buying V8 with 16MPG when a gallon is $4 and still having fun. In fact, I love feeding the beast.

I am one of the guys who laugh at the talk of gas mileage when looking at performance cars. While not horrible, I happily took a 1300 mile road trip in my STi that gave around 17mpg... 4 times... in 2 years.

But then again, I am also known to not make traditionally good financial decisions, but I have no bills and all my play money goes into cars and toys so I'm not a good baseline for the discussion.

Maybe in terms of resale value these cars will end up like old muscle cars. Not made anymore so wanted and valued by car guys but frowned upon by people who don't matter.

Its a simple answer, if you want a car to haul a bunch of stuff from Home Depot, don't buy an ///M3. If you want a car that can go off-roading, don't buy an ///M3. If you want to get great gas mileage and have low maintenance costs.....you guessed it DON'T BUY AN ///M3!!!!!

Jesus Christ, don't buy a plane if you want to go fishing, don't buy a Pepsi if you are looking for water, don't buy a sweatshirt if you need something to go swimming in. This isn't rocket science and quite frankly, as I watch the ///M line continually molded into something it was never meant to be because so many people have no clue that DIFFERENT CARS HAVE DIFFERENT FOCUS AND DIFFERENT PURPOSES. WTF!?!?!?! This ain't that hard to understand. If you were going to enjoy this car, you wouldn't have made this thread, so do yourself a favor, and don't buy it. Just like I wouldn't buy a 4x4 with a lift kit, because I don't go off-roading.

"Oh, I love that 911 S, but ya know, it like, doesn't, like, have any good cup holders. Plus, its like, such a rough ride.......like I don't understand why it can't be smooth like my friend's G37. Porsche sucks......"

Cheers,

The price of gas doesn't phase me much, as I assume it wouldn't to most others with the means to spend $75k on a car.

Yea. My 2002 (non sti) WRX only got 16-18 mpg if I drove it like I wanted to: WOT through at least the first 3 gears. I had to drive like a grandma to get 19-20 mpg in the city and the listed 28 on highway was impossible at 75 on southwest highways where speed limits are 75mph.

If gas is a concern for u at any price, pick a different car

buying the M3, u are already in the hole $1300 bucks on that gas guzzler tax....ITS THERE FOR A REASON! u cant pay that tax and not wonder y this car's mpg is crap

uncle sam's thinking is:

if u can afford to buy this car, u can afford to pay the tax, if u can afford to pay the tax, u can afford to pay for gas!

unless people here are buying this car bootstrapped and squeezing every single dime just to make the payment that they have little to nothing left over for gas/maint/etc...

Marcus Burnett: Hey man where-where-where's your cup holder?
Mike Lowrey: I don't have one.
Marcus Burnett: What the fuck? Whatchu mean you don't have one? Eighty thousand dollars for this car and you ain't got no damn cup holder?
Mike Lowrey: It's $105,000 and this happens to be one of the fastest production cars on the planet. Zero to sixty in four seconds, sweetie. It's a limited edition.
Marcus Burnett: You damn right it's limited. No cup holder, no back seat. Just a shiny dick with two chairs in it. I guess we the balls just draggin' the fuck along.
