Who will be willing to trade in their e90/92 M3 for the 1 series M coupe?

The unveiling of the 1 series M coupe is imminent and if indeed it's equipped w/ an uprated version of the N54 engine, it has the possibility of unseating the M3 as the most desirable M car in the BMW lineup because of that engine's tunability. My only concern is that the tendency of the 135i to understeer at the limit will still not be exorcised in the M version and that it won't come with EDC to make it even more versatile. We all know that it will only be equipped with a proper 6-sp manual so no DCT for the car.
Here is the link for some pictures of the partially uncovered orange-colored 1 series M coupe: http://www.bimmerfile.com/2010/08/27...w-1m-revealed/
Let's hear what you guys have to say about the pros and cons about 1 series M coupe vs the e90/e92 M3.

Phil

If it drives with more spark (or funk) than the M3, then I might be tempted. Weight is the enemy. BTW, spark and funk are industry-wide recognized technical terms.

And because of the smaller size, metallic orange seems to suit it - never thought I'd own an orange car, there's a first time for everything I guess.

Let's see how it drives.

If I didn't need the backseat/rear doors, the got rid of the pot-bellied pig bodyline, and fixed the HPFP I'd consider it. I had a Passat I painted almost that exact color. I'd rock it in that color.

I will not purchase another BMW that has a HPFP without longevity results. I wonder if this engine will need an oil catch can also? I'm not too crazy about the looks either.

Maybe in convertible form for fun, but my M3 isn't going anywhere. Two totally different animals here. Not an apple to apple comparison.

The lease on my 335xi is up at the end of the year and I've been leaning towards an e90/2 m3. Hopefully all the specs on the 1 series M coupe are out by then so I can make a somewhat educated decision.

With the anticipation BMW is building up, they better deliver. I do think this car has serious potential given the relative light weight (~3400 lbs) so I'm hopeful. The one thing that disappoints me though is going FI on the 1M as I much prefer high revving NA engines (I've been looking forward to going back to an NA engine after having my 335xi for a while now). Still, if they make this car exciting to drive, I'd be willing to live with the engine. The s65 is an absolute beast of an engine but I just find the e9x M3 a bit boring unless you're really pushing it (IMO still by far the best car in its class though, which is why it's one of my top choices).

If I like what I see with the 1M, I'll probably pick up a Z4MC or e46 M3 to tide me over for several months till the 1M hits our shores. I'd love to get back into an e46 for several months.

Not I. But, I can't wait to see it when they start selling. If they can get the weight down it might just be a big win for BMW. If not, then no amount of turbocharging will help it. Too bad it won't get a normally aspirated engine. For a car that small (have you been in the rear seats of a 1-series? worse than the 3 coupe and that's not good) I'd rather have no back seat. Can you say Z4M coupe? Hello.

Cheers.

I thought that was not confirmed. In fact, didn't SCOTT say the opposite was true?

As for the E82 1M, I would not consider it a good replacement for the E9x M3. However, when it comes to the next generation of cars, it might be worth a look, especially if it keeps the I6 (does not switch to I4). I say this because the M3 is losing the high revving V8, so that will no longer be a selling point for the car. The lighter F2x 1M might start to look like the more focused car vs. the F3x M3.
