Am I crazy to want to supercharge a convertible?

Eventually I'd consider supercharging my E93 (perhaps after the warranty is up, I assume a supercharger voids the engine's warranty..?)

On one hand, some people might say it's a waste to supercharge a convertible, since it's a heavier car, and you can't track it (at least not without a roll cage?).

On the other hand, a supercharger would certainly make up for the extra weight of the vert.

And I just love the sound of blow-off valves With the top down it would be that much better (or maybe it get old after awhile?)

You can supercharge whatever car you want. You can see convertible Lambos and porsches driving around town. So, go for it!

S/C it for the very reason it's heavier thus negating the extra weight!

Defiantely SC it. There are a few ESS SC on this forum.

If you think that's it's wrong why even go m3 vert? Rather go 325 or 335 instead?

Nothing wrong with S/C your car. Just don't forget on upgrading your brakes while you're at it.

I'm in the same boat, owning a M3 convertible. Nothing crazy with supercharging. However, looking for around 500 chp I'm not sure if I want to apply FI. There are hidden costs like assembling / disassembling the car for emission testing and the risk you take with your insurance. Plus more parts = more chance to fail = more maintenance. Methanol would be the next logical step, again more parts, etc. Once a stroker kit ( the most invisible hardware modification I know ) will come out to a competitive price, it will be hard to decide to keep the car NA or to go FI. Warranty time is working for me.

Superchargers take some power from the engine to be able to provide boost and compensate the drag. Even the S65 is a very strong built engine, I doubt it's made for FI with a CR of 12.0:1. NA seems to be the more natural approach for me. A stroked and well tuned engine with an improved, street legal exhaust should do the job, IMO.

We all get used to the power we have. Increasing power is an ad interim solution, always, and supercharging the engine is the most cost-effective way to do it currently. There is still a lot of development and literally no long-term experience with supercharging our engines.

Enjoy !

Eugen

I would too if it weren't for the warranty issues. I was glad that I didn't modify my last E60 M5. The day I made the deal on the E93, I had a transmission failure. I was 6 months out of warranty on time, but not miles. BMW NA to the rescue. I'm sure that would not have been the case with a supercharger on the system. SMG III not cheap to fix!
