The man is asking for automotive advice, not financial advice gentlemen!

I would strongly consider the 335d. But, the new 3 should be out in a couple years. So maybe a lease would be more palatable.

Also, if you go M3, get the e90. I really miss having the other two doors.

The decision making process is half the fun, take your time.

So bmw is stopping production of the M3 in 2011? and then making a new model that will come out in a couple of years?

For your salary range, may I suggest something like the new STI or EVO X instead? That way, you get something that is fun to drive, while not pushing your buying power to the max.

Ya, I plan on paying the car off as fast as I can.... I think I could do it in two year with not much of a problem seeing as i dont have anything else to worry about paying for.

first i'd say buy a used one... 1-2 yr old... this way if your situation changes (wife-to-be gets pregnant, free-place-to-stay vanishes, you know, life shit...) you can sell your expensive car and get back into something more within your budget without too much of a hit...
60k car on a 65k salary??? not saying you cant do it, but some months might be a bit tight... there are some nice cars in the 40k range, might be a better option... pay it off quick (probably 20-30% faster than a $ 60k car), keep it for a few years and save a whole pile of cash while you have no mortgage / no kids... what about saving $$$ to buy a house down the road? trust me, even with my $ 80k + salary, i wish i had never bought my $ 40k car when i decided to buy a house (nothing fancy, the cheapest one in the area...) financial life is not just about loans / mortgage / car payments... think about vacations, nights out, all that crap adds up at the end of the month !!!
anyway,, someone said we're not here to give financial advice, that's true
car-wise, the M3 i'm sure is awesome...

either way, good luck with your choice ! if i were you, i'd get a used e46 M3... 90% of the fun for 50- 60% of the price of a brand new one !

problem is you always going to want it, and once you have to buy a house and wife and kids etc, your 80k salary will definatly not allow you to purchase the car then, so I say get it now. Is your tundra paid off?
how old are you. and get the job first. My brother graduated with Elec engineer degree a few month agao and jobs are nill, even with connections.

+1 The OP makes less now than he will in the future but he will most likely have more responsibilities. Get it now especially if he has minimal living expenses. I am engaged with no kids and a decent mortgage. Didn't want to put off this dream knowing the wife will "need" a larger house to raise the rugrats.

another consideration is that more then likely when you have a "wife" she will not want you to buy an expensive car as such. lol

it's fine to enjoy a nice car before you get into a mortgage / marriage and all, but i think you also have to keep it realistic...
Step 1: get a job
Step 2: stay in that job
Step 3: see how much you spend on your day-to-day life
Step 4: figure out how much is left at the end of the month, take 50-60% of it and get a car you can afford...

mix those steps and you can be in a big big doo-doo before you even know it !

I think you are right in saying that a brand new one might be out of my budget or just not smart to get into... I was thinking about one like this:

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/ctd/1860786868.html

Seems like a good deal to me?

And I will not be buying anything until I have a job that for sure!!

at least you're on the right track used is best in your case (like i should have done ), this way if you have to get rid of it, you dont take such a big hit...

good luck with your future job & car...
PS: don't let the miss talk you out of a performance car... she'll find something else to b**ch about anyway

If you're only considering new and you can't afford the M3 you should look into the new S4 as well...

Agree, if the M3 is a little steep get the S4, its like M3's little brother. Alot of the same driving technology for about 12k less. If you're going for the 47k range, might take a look at it.

Im not only considering new.... Used would be okay especially if it were bmw and I could extend the service plan... that would be nice. do you guys think that is a fair price for a 2008 with 28k miles? what kinda prices should I try to get for an 08 or 09 ?

Saw an 08 DCT in Austin a month or so ago with 32k miles for 42k. My initial reaction to that car you posted was that it might be a little steep with a 6MT. But it's at a dealership so you can prolly wheel and deal it down from that.
