Media Obsession

Why does the media seem to latch on to the "subject of the week" like a rabid pit bull? It's always something. This week it's Shirley Sherrod. Her face is everywhere and the story won't go away. Last week it was the barefoot bandit. I read a story once and then I've had my fill. If some major update develops, then fine, run it. But the endless discussion about the same facts over and over again drives me nuts. I've seen Sherrod's face about 30 times too many. Same with the BB last week. Move on to something else already.

Public like to read about things that make their sedate life seem normal/uneventfull. They like to be titillated or to be able to believe that they have a less 'trouble' (or are smarter) than others. And the media will oblige with whatever they can.

Take lindsey L. - other than her immediate family, why would anybody really care about what her next 90 days is really?

because people are, in general, morons. however, in the quest for ever higher ratings and market share, you'll see crap like this. this is also why i prefer the bbc.

Change the type of news you're listening to. I remember hearing about this "barefoot bandit" only one time, and I can't recall anything about the story. And I have no idea who Sherrod is? Read stuff like the WSJ, they focus on stories that actually matter.

LOL I thought the same thing reading that in WSJ...I also thought the emphasis they put on her job title , "African American Agriculture Department official" in bad taste...we can see her picture, and what does it matter anyway? I've never seen a white person referred to as "Caucasian insert job title here"

ah yes I do remember the story, just not the name. I didn't bother to look it up since I'm on my phone. The point being the more legit news organizations focus on more relevant stories, or at least they don't shove the same stuff down your throat 24/7

True enough. I'm second generation American on my Mom's side. Dad's family has been here since way before the Civil War. Still, I'm not Irish-American, I'm just American. So is this Sherrod woman.

Americans, also know by in large as Sheeple, like to follow and tend to beleive whatever crap the media is spewing. a new story, no matter how trivial or "non-news" worthy it is will sell papers and airtime and that is all that counts

duh. the bbc aligns to my own personal biases, so i prefer watching it. other specific reasons include:

-cogent narration (often using multi-syllabic words!)
-fewer "human interest" or hollywood related stories (the kind that make me vomit)--these are typically also later in the broadcast, so i can change the channel before having to watch that drivel
-fewer graphics intensive transitions and cut scenes (watching cnn makes me feel like i'm looking at a web page designed for ADD afflicted retards)
-significant time devoted to events in asia/southeast asia (again, a personal preference)
-significant time devoted to "long-form" journalism or stories
