Too much negative camber?

I'm running around -2.3 front and -2.0 rear camber with my Dinan Stage III suspension this track season. Ran just slightly more aggressive last year--around -2.5 front.

Last year I was using Nitto NT01s, and experienced very even wear across the tread surface.

This year I'm trying the new Toyo Proxes RR. They've been great so far, with good grip and decent wear. I've put 16 heat cycles on this set, and they still have some life left. I've noticed though, that the inner edge of the tread surface has been wearing faster than the outer edge. I've been rotating them diagonally on the car as per Toyo's directions, and this wear pattern on each tire is very consistent. My assumption, then, is that for this particular tire, I may have a bit too much negative camber. Anyone have any thoughts or similar experiences with other tires on the E9X chassis? I know that the E9X requires less negative camber than the E46 did.

Can you give those tires a flip? What's the toe look like?

1. Is it possible to know whether this inner edge wear is coming from the front or rear axle, or both?

2. Have you checked your alignment lately?

It is very possible that different tires require different camber settings.

I run -2.8 front and -1.8 rear with NT01s and have nice and even wear. I found that -2.0 was a bit much in the rear, so I reduced it to -1.8.

Its hard to really pin that down if you rotate tires diagonally. Different tracks/directions will wear tires differently. As an example, Circuit of the Americas eats up the insides of the rear tires surprisingly fast.

But, I have my front camber on my E90 dialed in at -2.2 for NT01s which I think is about right vs -3.5 on my E46. The E9X has a better front suspension design so there's not as much range between static and dynamic camber.

But how do you like the Proxes RR?

FYI...I've been told that the RRs come from the same factory as the NT01s (Toyo has a controlling interest in Nitto). I've also been told that the tread splice thing was a manufacturing defect and the whole info sheet on rotating tires is bologna.

Similar situation, I was running 2.6f/-2.0r on NT01s and found the inside rears were wearing a bit faster. I reduced camber to -2.4f/-1.8r to maintain same balance. So far with a new set of NT01s, they are wearing more evenly. Driving style has a lot to do with it. As I got faster and started sliding the rears more, I noticed I was wearing the insides of the rears more.

Toe usually causes more inside wear than camber. Check your toe settings too.

Yep, I can flip them on the wheels, and then move the left-sided tires to the right. That way, the inside edges of the tread face become the outside edges and vice-versa, and I can still maintain Toyo's recommendation of the date-code sides of the tires facing the driver's side of the car on the front axle and the passenger's side of the car on the rear axle.

Good idea, but I rotated diagonally prior to noticing this preferential inner-wear pattern, so at this point I don't know if the wear pattern is coming from the front and/or rear. Just had the alignment done a couple of months ago.

Good to know.

I wondered if maybe my driving is slightly different than it was last season.

Honestly, without knowing which axle the wear is coming from, it is very tough to make the right change.

I am sure someone at the track has a contact pyrometer? That might be the fastest and most direct way to find out. You are welcome to borrow mine if you pay for postage

Thanks. I've got one in my track toolbox. I guess I should use it.
