Video Why Break-In Can Be Frustrating

The anticipation for the odometer to reach 1,200 miles heightened by each and every service van that passed me during the recent ED. Here, on my way from Munich to Regensburg, I avoided a slower truck and nearly got run over doing 105 mph before getting back into the slow lane. Even the slow lane wasn't slow enough for the 5,500 rpm/105 mph limit.

I found that the best time was off the autobahn; on the empty country and twisting forested roads between villages anyway...

My car arrives on Tuesday.....after a 3 month wait - i am not looking forward to having to restrain myself for 1200 miles. I intend to drive this car to no particular destination and for no reason day and night until i see those 1200 miles on the ODO

Ha i had the same experience. I remember going 105-110 in the left lane just crusing along. Then some X5 FLEW up behind me out of no where. He easily had to be hitting the limiter. Of course i jumped out of his way before he had to brake.

I also agree, i had more fun off the autobahn through the country and mountain roads. Take the M3 through the mountains south of Munich if you havent already.

You better be taking tons of pictures for us!

OK, I'm confused...

Are you the former "OC Kid" and just changed your username? And if so, I assume you just replaced your 2008 E92 with a 2011 E92, again in SSII??

No, you are not confused. In fact, you're spot on. I was one of the first with a March '08 delivery....and I can't get over SSII.... At the conclusion of a short-term lease I tested out some other marques but ultimately came back to the M3 as the best value for quality and for the level and delivery of performance. I am very happy with the new idrive and don't think I'll touch the ZCP suspension for some time. Also, the MT gearbox is distinctly smoother in this '11. In light of the current direction BMV (and the rest of the world) is going I think I'm keeping this one forever...Long Live the S65!

I was owned by a Lexus 430. Guy pulled up next to me at the red light and must've floored it. I couldn't do anything but wave. Had my 1200 service this past Tuesday.

Funny - We're going throught he same thing now with my wifes 335d with a 93 MPH max during break in. One of the reasons I traded my non sport 335i in on the M3 was because I was passed by an old lady in a Ford on the Autobahn. When I first got here, I thought there was no reason to go over 100mph. That changed -

Try to live here for 2 years and then go back to States for few days. It feels like everyone is standing still doing 65mph.

I wasn't going to either but I found that my 2011 ZCP sat too high in the front. I recommend doing the Eibachs in your car....... ride is nearly like stock and with the different front struts with lower perches in the ZCP the lowering is just about perfect in the front. Take a look at my photos that I will have up in about 2-3 weeks.

P.S.: Congratulations on the new M!!!

I know the feeling. I was exactly where you are one year ago today...on the Autobahn getting passed up by lots of vehicles during the break-in period. It is strange going 100 mph only to be passed up by other cars.

I was even passed twice by mini-vans with kids inside. The wildest thing though was to scan my mirrors and see nothing and then scan them again only to have a car (Porsche or Merc) waiting for you to get over. Some of them had to be doing over 150 to close that quickly.

But, you are right, the best roads are the B roads. It was hard to trust the GPS when there because you could look at a map and think, oh its only 45 miles away...why is the GPS reporting that it will take an hour and a half to get there? Curves, my friend. Lots of elevation changes and curves. The GPS was always right.

Have an excellent time. I can't wait to do the European Delivery again.

Wow, you went back to this November '07 post & found that sarcastic response to my buddy John when he jokingly said he'd run me in his 335...that was before you were even a member here, No?

No, I couldn't fathom an S/C...but I'll probably put the Brembos back on.

NeoE46: Yes, I pretty much stayed out of the fast lane on the A roads. I wish people understood and followed this concept here in the States. It's a law in many places that is neither taught nor enforced. Thanks for the well wishes!
