Some here might have guessed that already, the M3 won that comparison. Sport Auto's verdict pretty much summed up that the M3 and the RS5 are built for different people. It's not so much a surprise that the M3 beat the RS5 in virtually all performance categories, surprising though is that Sport Auto even liked the ride in the M3 (EDC) more than Audi's adaptive suspension. On top, the M3 testcar was roughly 10k € cheaper.

As to the M3, this is the first Hockenheim time we have for a ZCP E92 with DCT, which -- on regular Michelin PS2 -- was even a tenth faster than the E92 M3 (6MT) on Cup+ tires.

Best regards,
south
the 0 to 100 is the slowest time ive seen recorded on the M3. ive never seen anything outside of 4s which leads me to believe the test was flawed.

So if footie likes Audi above everything, even if it is not better, he will not go over to BMW. I mean, if you want to be cool and superior than others, you drive Audi, and not BMW or Mercedes.

IMO, the RS5 does not look that good when compared side to side with the M3. A5 looks like girls car but not 3 Series Coupé, that is why I also don't like so much the new Z4 (E89).

Now, about footie, he will not come here up to lose his time on this empty discussion. Fact is, RS5 is not an M3 beater. What can be discussed now, except that M3 owners bash Audi and Audi fans say how much better the than the M3 the RS5 looks. I do not think footie will ever sell his S4 Avant to get an M3 Coupé Competition. If he really likes the RS5 it is this one that he will get, just as most M3 owners will not sell their M3 for this RS5. So empty talk.

Conclusion: Audi failed with their RS5 as an M3 beater, they would not if they built and RS5 instead of an "M3-Killer". But in fact did Audi say that the RS5 was meant to beat the M3 or was it footie? If it was footie, so then it is footie's fault, that so many of see the RS5 as fail.

Overall, you may be proven right about another's future decisions.

Reliable sources were Footie's claim to knowledge about the RS5. There's a locked thread in the M3 vs... folder that's teeming with such references.

Audi bashing: From what I've read in this forum, you overstate the bashing of Audi by M3 owners. Eliminate all of the posts that were in response to some Audiphile talking up Audi latest and greatest effort and there won't be many posts left to point to where M3 owners gratuitously bashed Audi.

Back on topic...Three years down the road from introduction of the E9x M3 and I now find myself a little more appreciative of what M Division signed off on to produce in 2007. The car is truly a masterpiece for its market segment and nothing to sneeze at generally.

Guys, don't take it so personally. I own an Audi A4 Avant and an M3 convertible. It's OK to like one car vs. the other while not being a cliche. Yes the BMW may beat the RS5 in numbers but the RS5 may have a nicer interior and feel and not quite the same performance... I have seen and driven the RS5 and it is one seriously good looking car and the interior is far nicer than the M3. The M3 is a better all out performance car but the Audi is a better every day performance car. I have had my Audi for 4 years now and not a single problem. I have had two BMW's and they have collectively been to the dealer for repairs than all my other cars combined. I myself am considering an Audi just because I am fed up with BMW's quality.
Also, read this months Top Gear Magazine... they can't say enough positives about the RS5. The M3 is a really nice car but that does not make the RS5 a piece of crap nor those who drive it a cliche.

I think I mentioned already that sport auto had some issues with the launch control. They considered it to allow too much tire spin.

and once again......

the M3 proves it superiority.....after all the doubt and hype that the RS5 will be an M3 killer.

The RS5 is a fine car.....it looks beautiful and as a car enthusiast...you have to appreciate it......no doubt about it....i'd fancy to say it is one of the most aesthetically pleasing cars I have ever seen.

That being sad....

I was thinking about it.....I remember several months ago, there many a post circulating the car forums in response to the billboard ad war between audi and BMW in cali...(your move BMW? , Checkmate). Most of the responses were..."wait until the RS5 debuts....and see if its the same..." well...it has debuted...and I hate to break it to you.......its STILL...CHECKMATE.

Audi...it was a valiant effort though...

I'm really not to surprised at any of the results.
The R8 is only a slightly better performing car then the M3 at almost twice the price.
I know I said this before but it still stands true:
The only reason why the RS4 had such a presence when introduced was because it was a 420hp V8 going up against an five plus year old platform with a 333hp I6. Mercedes,BMW and now even Lexus go head to head and release their completing products at the same time.
Why can't Audi get with this program ?

Furthermore, before the E9x M3s came out, VW/Audi announce large price increases for the upcoming products and their huge budget for advertising and marketing . Please do not be naive in thinking that this doesn't mean gorilla marketing in forums and search engines......etc.

Agreed, thats the one problem I have with the GTR but I will be getting one of those this summer......:-)

The Audi S ans RS interiors are really nice but so are the M3 interiors. I think the thing that stands out/above about the Audi interiors are the seats, they are beautiful but that's not really and Audi part.... soooooo, yeaaah

a m3 convertable does not crank out the performance numbers of the coupe or sedan. if your going to get a convertable you should have got the A5 with an M3 sedan you have it backwards!

+1 the seats in the RS5 are really nice but overall I don't like so much the interior of the RS5. I find it dull, a bit too plastic everywhere, and the style boring (everything repeats itself with black all the way everywhere).

In my taste, the M3 interior (which is nice but nothing exceptional) is way nicer than that of the RS5. Maybe I am being unfair though just by judging from the pics...

I got my A4 AVANT (wagon) 5 years ago. The M3 2 years ago. I am getting rid of the M3. In my case, the only thing the M3 is faster at is going to the dealer for repairs. Of ALL my Audi cars, never a problem.

As far as the interior of the Audi being plastic... all my M3 is - is black plastic and a strip of aluminum. I like it as I like monotone interiors but the RS5 is much warmer inviting interior in my opinion. Sorry guys. I guess I am a bit "biassed" now since I have had so many issues with MY BMWs and none with Audi.

Are you certain that those cars were Audis?

If so, you are the luckiest car owner on the planet.

I think the RS5 is not a M3 competitor...more of a market wedge between the E92 M3 and M6...a la E-class coupe, but with sports characteristics (like AMG) included.

I would take the RS5 easily...I would buy the M3 just as easily...same with the S5 vs 335i. (Don't really care about awd vs rwd, or sports "feeling")

Audi really needs to fix their pricing disparity for the U.S...they aren't competitive at all.

I prefer the E92 looks over the A/S/RS5 looks...too bad the e92's are so common.

Guys, seriously. It it a sign of insecurity when you have a nice car like the M3 yet choose to insult others that are not M3 or BMW owners.

I have had a TT roadster, An A4 (1st Gen), A 4 Avant, A8, S8 and now an A4 Avant wagon that is from 2004. Other than maintenance, I have had no issues. As a matter of fact, Audi has done things out of warranty to as good will. Maybe it's luck...

I have had a 335 Convertible that had a fluttering top issue that BMW never owned up to and then the M3 that I have a DCT problem with. Again, BMW has never even had the decency of owning up to it.

Again, maybe I am biased by experience.

I'm off this topic. Good luck to you all and enjoy your M3s.
