BMW technology and platform to possibly underpin new Saab 92

According to Automotive News, BMW's engines, transmissions, and possibly the Mini platform could very well be the basis for a revival of the diminutive Saab 92 model. Discussions between the two companies are scheduled to take place at the end of this month. The Saab 92 was last in production between 1949 and 1956.

Saab is in discussions with BMW AG to use its engines and transmissions – and possibly BMW's Mini platform – for a new version of the 9-2 model, a Swedish daily reported.

Contact has been made between Saab and BMW over the 9-2, Dagens Industri reported, quoting an unnamed source. A meeting is scheduled to take place at the end of June, the paper said.

Saab Chairman Victor Muller said earlier this month that he is in talks with automakers to share technology and a platform for a new car inspired by the tear-drop shaped Saab 92 model that was in production between 1949 and 1956.

“Discussions are already ongoing,” Muller told Bloomberg News on June 11. “That will be on my plate for the next 100 days.”

General Motors Co. sold Saab to Dutch luxury sports car maker Spyker earlier this year for $400 million.

Muller told Bloomberg today that Saab is “talking to various parties” about sharing technology as a way to lower costs. Muller declined to say whether he is in discussions with BMW

BMW would not comment specifically on the Dagens Industri story.

"We are in talks with several interested parties who have interest in our technology," a BMW spokesman said. "There are no contracts with Saab at the moment."

Saab spokesman Eric Geers said the carmaker is looking for possible partners but also declined to comment on the report. "We are concentrating on the 9-5 and the 9-4X," Geers said. "A smaller Saab below the 9-3 is not in our business plan though it would be on our wish list."

Until BMW stays BMW, I do not care. Better to have BMW with MINI, Saab,... badge, than VW, Skoda, Seat with Audi badge.

that 92's design flow was ahead of its time. It is soooo aerodynamically correct. Too bad Saab never gotten off the ground in a correct manner. Love their cars, and love their engines.

It is always good to be associated with a legend, and the dark Green Saab 92 was a legendary car. The engine was a two-stroke two cylinder, and the car weight was something like 200 pounds. In their time, Saabs dominated the Monte Carlo Rally.
