Need feedback on dual clutch transmission

Hey guys,
I'm almost ready to close a deal on a low mileage used 2008 M3 coupe with the new dual clutch transmission ( don't recall how BMW calls it now,new SMGII gearbox )

Just wanted to know if that gearbox is reliable or is a trouble one ?
The car will be out of warranty so I wanted to buy something that will not give me too much trouble, Im a former 2002 E46 SMGII owner and I love those transmissions, but havent heard much about the new one

I asume you have it and you are happy, I used my E46 SMGII M3 for 4 years without any real problem, just once a software issue, but since my town is a crowded one, going back to clutch in traffic is not an option for me....

The car I'm buying has only 12,500Kms that means 7800 miles, thats the good part of the story

I have an 08 DCT and no problems, its great but why can't you get an extended warranty on it. I was planning to do this if I keep the car beyond the manufacturers. There's been a lot written about MT vs DCT and if you drive it in the manual mode anyway it's great.

I'd make sure it had the most current DCT software version, else no deal. There are numerous issues with older software versions, including the infamous "oh s**t" lag into second gear. In most cases, the current version of software seems to have cured these issues. So I'd demand to see proof that any car had the most current version--especially so for an 08. I'm not sure what the service situation is like in Costa Rica, and whether you'd have issues getting updates?

Other than that, the jury is really out on the long-term reliability of this gearbox. Some who have tracked there cars (MarksM) have had reliability issues, but I'm not aware of others having reliability issues outside those that were damaged by BMW service at the 1,200 mark. (Now software issues, that's another story.) No worries there, as if that happened, the gearbox sank and died pretty soon thereafter, and would have long ago been replaced with a new one.

As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong folks) the DCT is not serviceable. You can't change the fluid (BMW holds that hostage, ask Radiation Joe), and I think when the thing breaks it's a "replace" not a "fix" operation. You can't just go in there and replace a clutch (or two). A MT may be worth consideration based on the availability of service outfits in your neck of the woods, and the availability/transferrablity of CPO or other warranty related items out of the US.

i have two years and 25k miles on mine with no issues.....sure it can act odd every once in a while when its deciding which gear to pick during mid speed roll on acceleration...but thats really minor given how fast if shifts and how smooth it is all the other times
