I have an appointment set up, in a few days, with a local performance shop. I just can't decide whether or not to replace the insulation. What did you end up doing with the poodle that lived in your muffler? What are your thoughts on this?

I put it inside again and so did most people with this mod... and trust me it is the way to go... if after the mod you still want more pep just do the secondary cat delete mod, too.

Sounds great dude. I'm definitely looking into doing this. Do you have a picture of the inside of the exhaust before you welded it all up?

I might be in the minority here, but I like the stock exhaust best on tone. I definitely like it best inside without a doubt. On the outside, I'd like it a bit more vocal, sure, but not at the expense of raspiness, 'motorboating', higher pitch, or any of the other undesirable (to me
![]() By the way, this is the first video I hear where you can truly appreciate the stock exhaust, since most are only at WOT. Thanks man ![]() |

Update - I had my stock exhaust modded today, with welded tubes in place of the large perforated ones. I figured that, since the exhaust was already off the car, I would have the secondary cats replaced with 3" stainless tubing. Mistake. Holy crap, is this thing loud! Even though I left the resonators in place, it's too raspy for my taste. Now, it's back to the shop to get the cats back on. Live and learn.

Getting the cats back in place on Thursday. I'll give an update then. I hope that's what is making it sound that way. I never got the impression that the "Periokid" mod would make the car sound like it should live on a track - just give it a little more grunt.
*** UPDATE *** Got the secondary cats back in. Perfect! If anyone in this thread wants a perfect balance between beautiful noises that come from under the hood and the unmistakably BMW exhaust note - this exhaust modification is what you need. Removing the secondary cats, while nice sounding, is very exhaust-heavy and sounds like it is a track car - a little too "notice me" for my tastes. For anyone interested, I can the top of the cans cut open, and the larger perforated tubes replaced with S/S tubing. The steel wool was left on the smaller perforations, and the insulation was re-stuffed into the cans. My local shop did a great job with the welds, so there are no welds visible from the back of the car. For those wondering about price, the entire work would have cost me $400, assuming I didn't take out/place back the secondary cats. The sound is amazing! No drone, but the sound is mean under moderate and heavy acceleration. I would easily recommend this mod for those who want a little more exhaust grunt without being too obnoxious. Cost was under $300 including installation at Exhaust Works in Belmont, CA - highly recommended.
Glad you guys like the sound.
