2011 e90, tint, felt.

Has anyone with an 2011 e90 M3 tinted, or popped their interior panels to see if BMW finally felted the interior rubber?

I've searched and read about the issue of tint getting scratches, hit the tinter today and brought the issue up (he does the local BMW, Nissan, GM, Mini, etc, and everyone agrees he's the best in town) and he had never heard of the issue.

He flat out stated he wouldn't pop the interior panels on my M3, but would *give* me the felt and let me do it myself.

Also, I gotta tint my windows, the heat is killing me. Could I do the felt/moleskin post tint install? (I don't have the plastic tools or the felt kit).

My tint guy did not want to pop the panels either, but did the felt for me during the install.

I just picked up a 2008 E90 M3 last week with 1200 miles. The car is perfect except the damn tint scratches. I though it was just mine but I see it's a problem.

So wait, I can't put tint on my e90? What has to be done to make it not scratch?

Install Felt After Tint

At least that's what the Tint Protector directions say. It's to avoid the window cleaning and tint application chemicals that the tint guys use.

You are supposed to be able to pull the window rubber out and apply the mole skin by just pulling the upper door panel out a bit, but I haven't tried it.

@ PicassoM, yep do a search... Better yet: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...highlight=tint

I've read the thread, I was just hoping something had changed... I'm not keen on messing with the panels.

As I said, my installer had never heard of the issue and he tints for the local BMW dealership.

I didn't know you were supposed to do it post tint.

You should apply it after the tint has been done. It can be done immediately after, but the trip piece comes off the car easily as it has to come off anyway to install the moleskin. I did this on my 09 E90 and my tint is perfect after getting 3 window with tint scratched and getting them replaced.

Are the instructions that come with the moleskin for the BMW good? Any other instructions on-line that would be helpful?

I was going to attempt to answer this, but when I rolled my window down and saw the felt, it occurred to me the installer might have been smart enough to do it himself. So yes, my 2011 has felt, but it might have been installed by my tint installer.

The e90 has 2 seals (just like the e92). If you gently pry open the top seal, you'll see that there is another seal that contacts the window when it is down. Unfortunately, the inner seal on the e90 is rubber, unlike the e92. (and is this way in all 3 of my e90s, my 2008 e90 335i, my 2009 e90 335i and my 2011 e90 M3)

Yikes!

Once again, a helpful heads-up from the support group. Well done.
My intention was to make an appointment some time next week for the windows, and I wouldn't have thought to investigate this matter.

I picked my car up 5 days ago (2011 M3), and just now rolled down the driver's window, and I noticed a second lip down there
(as far forward to the side-view mirror as possible, since the window is still in there), I ran my finger down as far as I could,
and I swear I felt felt.

You don't need to pop the entire door panel off. My tint installer was able to just pop the top of the door off and pull the liner out in order to trim off the extra piece. For the records I have a 12/09 (MY 2010) E90 and I didn't have any extra felt other than the top piece. I've rolled my windows up and down repeatedly and not had a single scratch.

Hey, be happy, my tint installed scratched the hell out of my tint during install (Lumar CTX)... I didn't even get a chance to let the M3 scratch it...

To answer original question, there's no change with the MY11 E90... felt on top, rubber on bottom portion of lip. Popped the panels and used the self-adhesive tintprotector stuff, no problems...

Not sure why these installers refuse to install the felt. They must not be very good installers. Like others have said, you don't need to remove the entire panel, you can just pry back the top portion enough to remove the seal, apply the felt and put it back in. The tricky part will be to snap the top off the door panel in correctly so none of the clips stick up.

I am sure this is easy to do, but it can be a bit intimidating until you know exactly where the clips are located (spacing wise), how much force it takes to pop them, and what it takes to get the panel back on.

The first time I pulled a door panel on my E46 M3 I was a bit nervous, after that it was a 2 min. job.

If anyone has a quality DIY I think there would be many thankful board members.

There is something on E90post, but the pics are marginal at best: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=264098&page=2
