Which BMW Performance shiftboot did you use (part#)?
I thought regular 3ers and M3s have different design.s

thats pretty nice! im on it sold if it really makes the shift feel similar to my old s2k. i really want to get that feel back without getting an ssk.

I didn't think BMW made that alcantara boot for the M3. Maybe it's from LeatherZ or some other vendor. OP? Care to chime in?

I looked into that knob, but didn't like the lack of lighting and shift pattern on top, so modified a ZHP knob with the stock lighting, and problem solved on both counts. It's weighted too, and sits at the same height (I wouldn't want it any lower). It was the perfect solution for me, as I was not going to mess with an SSK. But yes, that one looks sportier, while the ZHP looks stock. And no, no knob change is going to make this shifter 'snick' into gears, but feel is much more satisfying indeed, and up there with the best IMO. Good day.

So does a SSK blow your warranty? I'm not real impressed by my 6MT... Now part of that is that I haven't driven a stick in 15yrs, but it really is a bit lousy. My girlfriend (who actually knows her cars) said I should put in an SSK.

We had that boot custom made to fit the OEM piece. You'll have to extract your plastic ring and transfer it over.

Leather Z sells a ZCP weighted shift knob that illuminates, and fits with very little modification. All you have to do is cut your stock boot/knob, and splice into two of your OEM wires. Other than that, you can always get a non-illuminated version, in which case you don't have to splice wires.

Benefit of a Leather Z is that it's illuminated. Disadvantage of course is that you have to tap into two wires and that you have to cut your stock boot off of your stock knob. I know the BMW Performance Knob does not light up, but it feels great, and I don't even notice that the illumination is missing. I got the boot and knob to go with my BMW Performance Steering Wheel and BMW Performance Stainless Steel Pedals, since I was going for a BMW Performance interior theme.

The knob was a nice improvement given the cost, but I'd consider Rogue Engineering's SSK, if only to make it just that much better.

My personal opinion, for what it's worth.
