Exhaust noise?

Was driving the M3, it has 444 miles on it and I haven't redlined it or gone over 5k RPM

2011 e93 M3 DCT

I noticed a pretty loud cracking type noise coming from the back (exhaust it seems), but I couldn't pin point it.

My father who was outside noticed it as well as it was pretty loud.

Sounds like maybe a tin can is back there

I tried searching for "exhaust rattle" "exhaust cracking" and just plain "exhaust" and couldn't really get anything to answer my question/slight concern.

Closest thing I found was this:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...exhaust+rattle

and that thread is full of 'maybe's and 'i think'

I was hoping someone 'knew' what it might be

I remember reading elsewhere that it may indeed be normal, but it doesn't hurt to ask right?

I called my CA and he asked the tech and the SA and they said it seems to be normal, as the sound immediately disappears once I start driving.

Another note... the car has gone through about 1/4 of it's oil... should I wait until the 1200 mile service or should I top it off now?
I also asked the tech and he said it's normal for the M to burn oil at the beginning.

Thanks in advance

I have had no issues and I am at 1500 miles. No oil consumption either.

I'm going to guess that you surely understand that the oil level is a gauge of how much of the "reserve" quart has been consumed, not of the total capacity. IOW, once it drops the full range it's time to add a quart. You could theoretically add a small bit before it gets to that point, but without the benefit of a dipstick and the hassle of getting the level just right and not overfilling, I'd not do that until it shows a quart low.

Is the noise you noticed right after startup, or after driving and warming up and then pulling to a stop.

I had the dealer deal with it.
But yeah it's reserve I know that
I hit low oil (red warning) before with my 335i.
Pulled over, called BMW Assist and told them bring me a quart.. they said they couldn't
So they just towed me to BMW.

I just never had the oil gauge move during the first 5k miles on my 335i so I was a little surprised, but not really alarmed.

The noise was after start up, while back up then going forward. After I hit about ~15mph it was gone.
Engine wasn't cold as I had driven it for a bit, but it wasn't at optimal temperature either

Definitely wait until the break-in period is done before you mash it. I know it's tempting, but it will be SO worth it you won't want to leave your car after you step on the fun pedal all the way to 135 before you back off.

I bought my car at 3400 miles so I didn't have the anticipation, but the first time I pressed the right pedal I fell in love.

why back off at 135?

if it’s broken in then you can go as fast as the road allows (of courses, assuming it’s empty, wide and open, clear, and you’re not endangering anyone but yourself)
