Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 prime lens

It would be for my D40. I've seen them go as low as $120 on ebay which is a steal and I love how how they produce such sharp bokeh images.

I know this lens wont AF on the D40 but that doesn't bother me much since I plan to upgrade to a D90 hopefully in a few months.

I already have a Sigma 10-20mm and a Nikkor 55-200mm VR in addition to my kit lens, if that means anything.

Thoughts/feedback?

It's a standard lens everyone should own. I've got a D80 so it focuses fine, but AF isn't so important on a lens like this IMO. Alot of the time you're shooting it wide open, or close to wide open so you're probably going to want to dial the focus in yourself anyway. BH has it for $120, I would buy from them before ebay...

Make sure you don't really want a DX format 50 1.8. I have that lens and really like it, ~$200 from most places when it is in stock. The other lens you are referring to would be too long for my liking on a crop sensor DSLR.

What is a "DX format 50 1.8"?? Never heard of such a thing. Now, do you mean a "50mm equivalent focal length"? In other words, the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 AF-S.

And an FX 50mm becomes a 75mm equivalent on a DX body, and that is "too long" for you? Seriously? I guess you shoot exclusively wide angle, because a telephoto zoom is going to be far longer than a 50mm....

I love mine, got it from Ritz for a little under $120. $120 is borderline high, try looking around at places like Adorama and such.

Its a great low-light lens too, and because of that and its high f-stop, you can get some nice starry effects off of street/building lights for night shoots.

Snapped an open box one at Best Buy for $99. I have done 3 shoots in a row with it, including today. I don't even bring my other lenses with me. I really love this lens. Images are insanely sharp and DOF is also great.

Sloppy typing, yes equivalent 50mm focal length. I know an FX 50 would only be effectively ~75 on a DX body, but I like the perspective at 50. I borrowed a friend's 50 1.4G DX and it was phenomenal, just couldn't justify ~$500 for one.

^Nice shots.

I'm basically sold, this lens should be perfect for my trip to Montreal next month.

I am the newest of newbies - just picked up a D3100 Friday, body only with this lens and a Tameron 18-270, I shot all day on Saturday with the Nikkor - love it. I am thinking about returning the Tameron and grabbing the kit lens as I see myself using this a lot more.

I have it and can't say enough good things about. Only issue is no AF. If you spend a little extra for the 50mm f/1.4 you get the AF motor in the lens. All in all though, I love the lens and the manual focus helps you learn your camera more. Bite the bullet and do it.

It's A LOT of extra cash to go from the 1.8D to the 1.4G.

1.8D - $120
1.4D - $330 (175% more than the 1.8)
1.4G - $435 (260% more than the 1.8 and 32% more than the 1.4D)

I opted for the 1.8D because I knew it would be a less used lens for me. Actually mounted it yesterday for a few shots of the kids for Halloween. But I'm glad I didn't spend the extra money for the 1.4D, and really glad I didn't opt for the 1.4G. Those savings will be put into the 24-70. I was trying to make the 17-35, 50 and 70-200 combo work, but I'm finding that I really need a 24-70.

I'm just hesitant to buy one right now, as I'm thinking it may get a refresh any minute. It has been out in the latest generation for 3 years now, but I don't think Nikon makes updates that quickly. With the recent introduction of the 16-35 with VR, I'm thinking Nikon may do a 24-70 with VR. Although, it took Nikon 6 years to update the 70-200 (VRI from 2003-2009, the VRII from 2009+). CES 2011 is just around the corner, so maybe I'll wait until after that passes to buy the lens...

You can tell by Sniz's 50mm 1.4 to kandaddy's 50mm 1.8 that the bokeh defocus circles are VERY different.

The main differences between the 1.4 and 1.8 I think is that the 1.4 has better overall defocusing elements (the round defocus balls is a lot more smooth), goes down th 1.4 (doesn't mean too much but helps) and silent wave motor.

With that said, is the extra 300 bucks worth it for the 1.4? you guys make the call.
