Three thread engagement????

I purchased the longest bolts I could get 12mm x 1.5mm x 60mm. With my track wheels and 12mm spacers (needed), I only get 3 threads worth of engagement (4.5mm). I think I already know the answer, but can I use these?

Next, can I get studs that will be long enough to get full engagement with the lug nut?

Thanks in advance.

I sure am glad I decided to scrub in the track tires before going to the track. This would have been a big bummer if I got to Watkins Glen before finding this out.

That's not enough to be safe Joe, not even close. You'll have no problems finding studs in the correct lengths. I have Vorshlag bullet headed studs that take spacers easily.

Thanks for the response. The problem I have is that most studs are not long enough. The hub section of my wheels is about an inch thicker than stock. Add a 12mm spacer and I run out of thread.

28mm (stock bolt) + 25mm (extra thickness of track wheel) + 12mm (spacer) comes out to 65mm. The longest bolts are 60mm and are pretty hard to find. The threaded section of every bullet nosed stud I've seen is less than 60mm. H&R claims to have a non-bullet nose stud with a 70mm threaded section. Since I don't need to perform quick wheel changes in the pits, this could be a solution.

I'm hoping someone on this board is familiar enough with stud issues to give me a definitive answer. But maybe, I'll just have to try it by trial and error.

Thanks a bunch for the help. I found the same information just a minute ago on another site, so that lends some sense of confidence in this info. Anyway, I seem to be pretty far off the mark right now.

I'm thinking about ordering the H&R studs as they seem to be available in the appropriate length (70mm).

We like to see 5-6 turns to secure the lug, especially if seeing track use.

Test fitted one stud on each side of the car. The nuts have full engagement with about 2-3 mm to spare. So the thread engagement problem is solved.

I haven't installed all of the studs because the threads are so bunged up. I've taken a Dremel to ends of the studs to erase the first thread and a half. Now I have to chase the threads all the way down since they are so rough.

Has anyone else experienced thread quality issues with their studs?

You've already got reach issues. Have you considered sending these back rather than giving up a full 1.5 turns?

H&R

They are threaded all the way to the end. No bullet nose. They came to me pretty beat up, however.

No. I bought them from Omar on Ebay.

Just kidding. I bought them from a club racing sponsor who will remain nameless. I will contact them and provide my two cents worth.

DAMN!!

How long are the studs you ended up with? I thought the 90mm ones would work since you're at about 75mm with your thick wheel, spacer and stock bolt.

Directly below are the dimensions of the Turner 90mm studs. The H&R is threaded over the area of the bullet nose on the Turners. I needed about 10mm of that last 13mm.

Thanks for the explaination and pic. So the Turner ones only gave you 64mm or usable thread.
