M3 vs. US Government

Saw that a bill was signed today saying 35.5 MPG combined for all manufacturers by 2016.

Hopefully there a loophole where they say make an electric car that gets 50mpg so they will be able to offer a sport's car that is reasonable 17-20mpg. Sounds like the gas guzzling V8's day's are numbered.

Yeah, that is really irresponsible legislation. Heck, "radical", maybe even "pinko" (to use an anacronism), I'd call it. Forcing folks to be more green, but doing so along with industry input and buy in. Terrible. I suppose you think the massive deregulation of the financial industry was a good thing as well? I hope you had a crystal ball and had no investments during the crash. I'm not saying more and bigger government is better but that really is not the issue.

This is why I'm privately starting to think that the E9x M3's will be akin to the 993.

+1,000 --- this guy (the Obamanation) is the Anti Christ. I knew if from the beginning. This jackass was spouting this shit 4-5 years ago. The funny thing is I have seen a number of threads on this very forum of him on a fucking tshirt that members are proudly displaying. The same ones that probably have a Che Guevarra tshirt as well.

This whole "green" movement is supported by special interests to the Democratic party. Funny Al Gore has taken the lead in this movement, however I wonder if it has to do with his investment in Capricorn Investment Group LLC, or Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, which invested a billion dollars in companies bidding on "green" contracts. They crucified Cheney for his ties to Haliburton but where is the left now?

Government regulation of certain industries is need I will admit. However their comes a point when it's influence effects the private sector to much. To many strict regulations will lead to companies being force to raise the cost they charge for the end item (which is of course is passed on to the consumer) which could eventually lead to declining profits, and bankruptcy.

If you believe the blame for financial collapse due to deregulation of the industry is soulfully on the hands of the Republican party you are clearly misinformed. Sure Republicans sponsored their share of legislation relating to this, however what about the policies of Clinton Administration in the early 90's? Barney Frank and the House Financial Services Committee? I guess those facts have been omitted by the talking points of the left. Again both parties are at fault.

Fuck global warming.

I experienced the coldest winter in my 25 years of living in SOUTH FLORIDA. It was 40 degrees for 2 months straight. And stayed in the low 60s for another 2 months.

Winters usually last 3 weeks in miami and never get below 45 (rarely) and never for this long, this year it lasted almost 4 months.

GLOBAL COLDING...

Idiots get it right!!

I thought this had been in place for a long time? I thought that was why BMW was thinking about bringing some of their 4-cylinder cars over here.

Not quite......gas turbine engines put out little atmospheric pollution compared to other fuel burning processes. This is due to the turbine engines are 95-99% efficient where our piston engines are ~30% efficient.

Don't despair, there is hope! The 335d can already get close to the 35.5mpg mark (I'm getting 33 with a mix of driving), and it's about as fast as a Mustang GT, a V8 Charger, a G37, a B7 S4, a 350z, a 535i, and many other sports cars of today.

Give it another 6 years and it's entirely possible we'll be driving a 320hp, 520lb-ft sport sedan getting to 60 in less than 5 seconds and returning more than 35mpg. The only catch is it'll be running on diesel, but is that really such a bad thing? I'm driving a diesel now and I can assure you it's not.

The loophole you mentioned is actually part of the bill. The bill is stating that the average MPG has to be averaged between their ENTIRE fleet.

So if they can pull a 100mpg car out of their arse, they're able to produce a 1 mpg car safely

So a 335d can do 0-60 in 4.3 seconds like the Mustang GT?

Don't I wish! Maybe with a chip (or two ). But yes, I meant the previous generation Mustangs, not the brand new one.

I thought the CAFE was calculated on the combined average of the vehicles SOLD, not necessarily the average of "one each" made by the company. So if they do have a 100 MPG car, but only sell 1,000 a year, and an M5 getting 10 MPG and sell 100,000, that 100 MPG car isn't really going to help out.

And yet the government continues to subsidize gas

If they let gas costs operate at market value, more people would look to better MPG cars.

But I'm curious to see how quickly the same people that argue now about too much regulation would change their argument if gas went up to market value.
