Normal...

Post a vid if possible.

I have also seen rapid up/down movements which I consider not to be normal, but BMW claims that it is.

May be the beginning stages of an idle control valve (ICV) issue. Mine is getting pretty bad still no CEL so BMW won't do anything about it and I've only got two months on my warranty.

Mine did it for about a week back in 2010.. Was told that it was a possible ICV issue.. no codes..

Now it's 2012 and still on the same ICV with no issues whatsoever.

That's kinda strange. Mine is definitely getting worse. It started with a bit of a stumble (i.e. it would crank an extra half crank) and a bit of up-and-down of the RPMs. Now it cranks an extra crank and the RPMs really bog down.

Can you post a video of it?

Sounds like something is awry based on your description.

Similar to this but not as bad...yet. Notice the "stumble" at about 0:03-4. Mine only bogs down/bounces around once or twice though.

This is the EXACT issue that my friend Julio has with his 2011 M3. And he is a technician at the dealership - BMW tells him that it is 100% normal. My car has done the jumpy thing a couple of times but not consistently like the video and Julios car.

I don't see abnormal starting in that video, looks ok.

Let me ask you this - what temperature is it there? These issues seem more pronounced in colder climates. It's possible that newer BMW DME software could potentially have a remedy for this.
