Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Good advertisement for Hans. I'd hate to see what would've happened if he wasn't in a race-prepped car without the safety gear he had. He wasn't sore in the video, but he was dazed and confused... probably thinking to himself, "what the hell just happened", or "what went wrong". I have doubts about the 148mph though... video looks kinda sped up at times, and that's not a likely place at VIR to hit that kind of speed.

That is a very highly tuned STi, I know Phil and the car, he won several 1st places with that it, and last November he ran 1.58 with it at VIR Full. At that speed, if part of his wings broke off, I can imagine how he got into that situation. I am glad he appears to be alright.
I just found the thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1961054 Very unfortunate. Last edited by FTS; 03-30-2010 at 10:25 PM. |

That's one intense crash that started and ended very suddenly. I'm really glad the driver was unhurt.
I also can't believe how destroyed the steering wheel was as a result of the crash. With no cockpit intrusion, that's pretty unbelievable.

He seemed to be okay until he hit the tire wall. Two years ago, or maybe even one year ago, the wall was a lot further away from the track. But, VIR built town homes along the uphill esses which narrowed the run off space to the left of the track. If you run the video again and stop it as the car rotates in direction, it is easy to see it tracking backward in a straight line, until it made contact with the tire wall. Then it flipped. Had it not hit the tirewall, it may have been a non event, other than a need for clean underware.
Word has it additional town homes are to be built, continuing toward Oak Tree along the side of South Bend. That could narrow up the left side of the track there. Not a happy thought. vz

Well, he did scrub some speed spinning and didn't go head first into the barrier... I wonder what it would have looked like w/o a roll cage and all the air bags deployed in on e of our cars.
