I've seen an e92 M3 last weekend with something that looked like a roll bar (thick piping going behind headrests) and two harnesses for driver and passenger attached to the bar. I could not find the owner to ask what it was, but it looked removable and very clean. I wonder if anyone here knows about this harness option.

RDSport Sells a Harness bar as well as a few companies have custom made solutions for that

How is the harness bar attached?

I talked to them about a month ago. They said early '11 before they have a kit for the e92

I was actually in HMS Motorsports this morning and they said they believe the harness will be ready in the new year. Apparently, they have changed testing companies, but the E9X M3 harness is being tested at the moment. The burden of testing for the USA lies with HMS as they are the US importer.

It is absolutely true. I have personally seen two track incidents in which the drivers were probably spared serious injury from the roof coming down, due to not being harnessed in a race seat. A half-done track car is a very bad idea. Leave it alone, or prepare a dedicated track car.

No one "plans" to roll their car, but it happens. There is continuing discussion in many clubs about the appropriateness of allowing cars on track with harness bars and race seats, but no rollover protection. But regardless of the rules, it is a bad idea.

But if it's a 4 pt harness and there is no submarine belts, than you can still "slide down" the seat in the event of a roll over. I love the schroth harness in my wifes E36, I spend less focus trying to keep my body positioned.

Obviously, this is a personal decision. But, do you really believe you can "slide down" in your seat in the midst of a violent roll over, with a high g-force potentially pushing you the other way?

Were thes incidents with roll over in cars with pre-tensioners? In a BMW, if it thinks you are about to do something stupid, the pretensioners tighten the seat belt and hold you in your seat. If the air bag deploys, it sets on explosive charges to tighten the belt and hold you upright.

I also believe you have no chance to slide anywhere under control in the middle of a flip.

This is great news. I'll be one of the first buyers!

Maybe we can take turns at this. I called Schroth today and they said that testing was near complete or complete, but they didn't have the results yet.

However, they expect to have E9x quick-fit belts ready in the New Year, but probably not January or Feb but "a few months" so maybe late spring if we are lucky.

We'll see. If they're still vapor in the beginning of April, then I'll be getting the Rallye 4s. I might get them anyways if the Quick Fits are too $ (more than e36/e46 applications - those are already $335 http://www.schrothracing.com/store/T...it-pro/qfp-bmw). FYI, I've seen Rallye 4s with my own eyes in an '08 e92 M3.

That's great news. About time. I will be one of the first to order a kit!

Thinking about another direction...

I am leaning towards getting anchor points installed and fitting one of these and using the clips

http://www.schrothracing.com/store/C...m/profi-II-asm

I am going to hook up with a race car builder and see what the options are. I'll let you know how that goes.

That's probably a reasonable option and more of us might have to go with that if we don't see a product soon. However, there is one caution with this type of belt in the absence of a harness bar or roll cage mounted set up, and what the Schroth guys say is that an important part of the testing is how strong the seat back is under severe conditions. Evidently, the seat back is very important because of the angle of the belts and if it does not tolerate the load and gives, the load is going to be transferred to your spine instead (for those of you worried about roll-overs, this will definitely make you sit lower in the seat).

Anyway, it was an interesting aspect of the testing that I did not appreciate. I thought it was mostly about making sure the seat belt anchor points are adequate, which is important, but not the whole story.

Absolutely. These harnesses are designed for non-race seat applications. I am tall anyway and I am wondering (i.e. I don't know!) if they can be tethered to the frame below below the parcel shelf to give the correct restraint angle. There are definitely hard points up there for the rear seats. I am hoping that one can have clip-in bolts attached that protrude through the trim to occasionally hook the harness up to for track days and posing.

That is why I want to chat with a qualified harness installer before doing anything - even with the bespoke system that is being developed - and understand and be confident in the restraint system.

I can't wait. I stopped calling 6 months ago. Good to hear they are "almost" there. I'm getting tired of "holding on" and the CG-Lock isn't quite cutting it any more.

I just spoke with Tim @ Schroth, he said it's "looking bad" for a release before summer. So maybe this summer, fall, hopefully before 2012? He could provide no date nor timeframe whatsoever. Rallye-4 time for me.

I think Tim is sick of the delay as well. I don't understand why it is taking so long for the proper certifications. I bet they have a a few prototypes that would work great in our E92, but the "certifiers" may be a bit gun shy.
