Alpine White vs Silverstone 2

Hi Guys,

Ready to buy my M3 Coupe but have been constantly thinking about whether to go for AW or SS2.

So Im looking for your experiences with these colours on everyday situations.

- Does the colour still impress you on the road and out of the showroom or off the magazine page, where staged artificial lighting makes the car look fantastic.

- Would you still choose that colour if given the choice again or are you disappointed.

- Does the car still look good when a little dirty. My fear is that the AW will show up everything and require constant cleaning where the SS2 may be more forgiving.

- Living in London and the weather always being overcast gray - does the AW still look as good?

- Lastly, do you feel that the SS2 is too conservative and the AW is more thrilling?

Your thoughts please.

Cheers

If you want an M3 that stands out then don't get white, there are a million white ones around.

Good point :-) Any thoughts on the silver?

Could the reason that there are so many AW cars out there be that it is the best colour.

I have AW myself, but have seen an E90 in SS and it is attractive. I would have no problem with the SS and there are not as many as there are of the AW ones. Both colors show off the lines of the M3 very well.

Personal preference in the end.

I have SSII, and I couldn't be more pleased with it. The amazing thing about a silver car is that even when dirty, it still looks good. Given the predominant weather in your locale, I think it is a clear choice, as long as you like the look.

I've acquired way too many cars over the years, and I always experiment with different colors, but I always find myself coming back to some variant of silver.

SSII is the catalog colour for the M3 (at least the sedan) after all.. I think it shows the lines of the car very well. I was considering an AW when I got mine but couldn't be happier with my SSII.. it's a very unique colour.

I have Jerez/extended black.

If I had to do it again I would do silver/ extended fox red.

After washing my black car, the front of the car is dirty before I have a chance to dry the back... no joke.

I have SSII as well, and wish it was more like millennium silver, but it's a very nice color nonetheless. I'd call it more of a blue-silver rather than silver-blue, but hides dirt almost as good, looks classy, it's a unique M color, and it's great for hot TX. But I'm glad I chose a black interior since the other choices don't match that well IMO.

Having said that, AW was a close second, and searched for cars on either color, but my SSII popped up first. Seems like you're on the same boat, so if you want to widen your prospects of finding a car (unless you're doing a special order), narrow down the options and let fate decide the color . Can't go wrong with either one IMO. Good luck.

+1 another vote for SSII. I can't stop looking at it even today. It looks brilliant in the sun and at night it changes color to a darker hue.

I've received a lot of compliments on my SSII's paint. Its a rare color and in different types of light it looks more silver or silver-blue. In cloudy condition it looks like a deep silver and in bright light and halogen it shows a bit of blueish silver. Just enough.

Love it and it doesnt show much dirt at all, good luck!

I have seen a dozen AW m3 in sedan, vert, coupe form and none impress me in real life, no matter what weather condition it is. AW looks good in pic, but not in real life even for the e46 m3.

SSII is the one that impress me the most in all current M color and I have seen about 7 of them. all looks good and clean be it in brigh sun light, at night, sedan, coupe, vert....all looks awesome.

I would get SSII on silver extend interior. That will make your car more unique as you cannot get this combo anywhere else including other brands

other color such as black, space grey, sparking graphite looks good when they care clean. but very dull when a little dirty.

IB does not impress me yet.

If only there wouldn't be cues of green in this color I would have surely gotten it... in any case, it still wins over AW IMO.

Your eyes must work differently than mine, and I have also lived with it. Hopefully, you're not relying on the "crazy," but attractive, photographs that show up on the internet, because they are not "reality." Given all the software crap that gets superimposed on digital photos these days, you have to see something in person to judge reality.

I can't say that I have any clue what "cues of [name your color]" means, but I have not seen anything approximating "green" in this color, in any lighting condition. It does tend to reflect whatever sky color it finds itself under. In sunlight, it is nothing other than a very nice silver. Under grey, it does have a "bluish" tint.

Thankfully, we never have "green clouds" where I live.

I personally love silver cars and believe that silver is definitely the most forgiving of ALL colors. It is, period. My first BMW (2004 330i) was titanium silver and although it was a common color, it was very easy to take care of and looked great. I also love M-exclusive colors. But I do not care for SSII at all. To me, if a car is silver, it should be SILVER! I have seen some pictures of SSII cars that look incredible primarily because the car looks silver in that photo's particular lighting. But whenever I see a SSII car in person, I always see the blue/green hues and I think that the color is just ruined as a result. No offense to any SSII owners but I just don't care for it. I guess that's why they offer multiple colors!

My car is AW. A little boring? Maybe. A little common? Yes. But it looks great and still turns heads daily. Some guys pulled up next to me on the freeway yesterday and were snapping pictures of my car with their camera phones! If I had ordered my car exactly to my specs (I didn't because I needed to find an '09 available to get the 0.9%) then I probably would have ordered IB or JzB. But I love my AW and would choose it over SSII hands down.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the posts - You all are helping me make an informed judgement. Cheers.

I know that AW is a common colour amongst M3 owners but there are very few M3's around my neck of the woods, mostly down to the price in the UK. However, there are more silver cars than white, made by other manufacturers, out on the roads.

The response so far has been in favour of SS2 but would you guys still choose that colour again if given the choice?

Do you find it too conservative a colour considering that there are a lot of silver coloured cars and less white cars in london or where you live( if thats the case)? And the white would stand out more?

Or in your opinion, after being with that colour for a while, it still beats the AW hands down, and so it doesnt matter that there are a lot of silver cars out there too.

I chose those two colours as I feel they show off the lines of the car much more than the others.

Im also going for a factory build car. Ive been out of the country for two years with work and Im going home to buy the car Ive been dreaming of all that time.

I understand that brochures and showrooms cheat the lighting to make the car look as good as can be. (I work in film VFX - its all about cheating the audience ). So this thread is about getting the views of people who live with these colours without the photoshop artist ready to make the car stunning.

Come on AW owners youre getting beaten down over here - stick up for your choice of colour and make it a fair fight otherwise im being turned in the way of SS2

Cheers again.
