The Anti-Racing Story:M3 vs 2009 911 Turbo

Just thought I'd share a recent experience. I was merging on the 404 south from Newmarket, and a truly stunning white 911 Turbo with those awesome LED running lamps sees me, waits for me to merge, and then tries to race me. I am in the left lane going about 120kph, and he is in the middle lane about a car length from me. I could tell by the way he was driving that he was waiting for me to pass him so he could start a race. I know I have no chance in hell, but this guy keeps egging me on, in a kind of arrogant way. So here's what I did, I maintained my speed until he got it out of his system, successfully passed him, gave him a big sincere thumbs up for his awesome car (it was really amazing to look at in person, I'm not a Porsche guy, but this one has me thinking) and that diffused him, and he smiled and gave me a thumbs up back. I merged in front of him, and he ended up following me for about 10-15km. He even waved when he exited the highway. Anyway, I thought that was kind of cool.

That's the best thing you could've done for many reasons. Good on you!

When I had my GT3 I got tired of idiots trying to egg me on with their cars. In the end I would just simply acknowledge their thumbs up and rarely raced. I had nothing to prove and too much to lose.

Yeah, that's a nice story. Kinda like good sportsmanship.

I always get people trying to race, but I just smile and give a thumbs up and they end up being cool and back off. They usually give a thumbs up back.

A few months ago I was in my Porsche and pulled up alongside a Volvo 850R. It's kind of a cool unique turbo Volvo that's pretty quick (at least in its day) I said "great car" and gave the guy the thumbs up. He said, "No, great car to you." And so it went. We applauded each other and cruised on.

Less aggression and a much better feeling in the long run then trying to prove something that doesn't really matter in the end.....

I think everyone here knows he would put a couple bus lengths on your stock M3 but regardless shame on him for not trying to fight someone his own size. It would be the equivalent of you pulling along side a G37 to give a complimentary beat down. Even though sometimes people need to be reminded of the food chain on the road.

Cool story...enjoyed the read. I would have done the same. The turbo is god's chariot....I would never even think of taking one on....that thing is friggin rocket. I saw one the other day....albiet I love my M3 to death.....my tail did go between my legs a bit. I agree with Mike G....its def not a fair fight....but then again...its the turbo...so for most cars it wouldn't be fair either.

If it is an empty road, I may drop into 3 and boot it a little for show and then cruise at the usual speed. If there is traffic, a thumbs up and a smile and let the guy drive in front of me.

Same thing happened to me in my C2s, I humbly bowed out of the race from a 996 Turbo.

The title does say anti-racing story, that should have been a clear clue not to read this thread... Sounds like someone doesn't wanna look like a chump on the highway. So do you only race cars you know you'll win against? where's the fun in that? I would've ran with him regardless of whether he destroyed me or not (if the roads were clear). We're all different I guess.

I don't race on the street. My neighbour was heavily into the import car scene and has lost a couple of good friends to street racing, even when the roads are clear you can lose control. Take it to the track.

I never track, so I race on the streets where the 335i > M3.

(Yes ladies and gentlemen, I am trying to make this another m3 vs 335i thread)
