Akrapovic Slip-On exhaust install

After some research on this forum, I decided to purchase an Akrapovic slip on exhaust for my E90 M3. My reasons for going with Akrapovic were the positive reviews, high level of quality, and what I consider reasonable pricing given the system is titanium and the quality of the welds, materials, etc is second to none. I decided against the full system as live in an emissions county and have heard of the CEL issue. Also, I did not want something much if any louder than stock.

I purchased the exhaust through IND along with a few cosmetic modifications and couldn't be happier with their customer service. Everything was packaged perfectly and shipment was sent promptly.

Initial impressions: The exhaust packaging alone was like no other exhaust I have seen. In addition, the quality of the exhaust surpasses any other I have come across.

I had the exhaust installed at Funktionauto in Dulles, VA. The guys at Funktion adjusted their schedule and were able to fit me in for the install the day after I received the exhaust. This shop is as professional as it gets. I have used Funktionauto on other servicing and modification work on other cars and I trust them completely. The guys at the shop have great attention to detail and I will be returning soon to get my poly Vorsteiner front spoiler installed. Getting onto the exhaust install:

Off with the stock exhaust:

Side by side comparison:

Install complete:

Impressions: If you are looking for a loud exhaust, this is not the one. There is no drone or resonance what so ever at any RPM. The exhaust is mildly louder than the stock exhaust and in my opinion is the way BMW should have made it sound from the factory. You really only notice the increase in sound when you get past 4-5K RPM. I've had my share of loud exhausts in the past and on a car I drive daily, I wanted something a bit more subtle. I couldn't be happier with the Akrapovic slip on system and can always convert it into the full system if I choose to at a later date.

Nice! A lot of good reviews about Akrapovic lately

Question: can the tips be adjusted so that all four are parallel? They look slightly crooked right now.

You are local. I would love to see and hear this thing in person. I can meet you at Funktion the day you go there again.

There is some play with the tips, however, the outer tips are normally positioned to hang lower than the inner tips. On mine, the right outer tip may hang slightly lower than the left outer tip. This may have been due to some slight variance in the welding of the brackets between the two sides. Unless you are looking at the tips from eye level, it is not noticeable.

Dondon, I will let you know when I am at Funktion next. I am planning for either Thurs or Fri of this week.

Congrats. I have it on my e90 also and love it. The quality is simply stunning, especially for titanium.

Nice post with nice pictures. Why no heat shields around where the exhaust goes under the CV boot? Are the heat shields not removable from the stock exhaust?

I was looking at other photos of the exhaust on other cars and may readjust it so the tips are not slanted. Is this done by adjusting the rubber hangers?

VictorH: I haven't gone back to the stock exhaust to look offhand, but I don't think there are mounting points on the Akrapovic for the heat shields.

why is this titanium exhaust like in the middle of eisenman sport and race which are just stainless steel.

shouldn't titanium just offer a high pitch loud sound? i just find it confusing that the stainless stell is louder then a titanium. could just be the way the muffler is designed internally too but still... had to ask. sorry if obsurd question

The crooked tips would definitely bother me, but it should be easy to fix. Just rotate the mufflers slightly with the clamps loosened and tighten them back up. Obviously 2 people are needed to do it in one shot. The extra benefit would be tips are tucked up nicely. I'd also push the tips all the way in; they're sticking out a bit more than I like as well, but the good thing is they're adjustable for different tastes.

Do a vid man, so we can appreciate the sound. Most Akras I've heard are the full variety. And what's the difference inside? It has to be at least somewhat louder, no? More details man . Take care.

OP: Nice exhaust, however it does appear to have been installed in haste. For a cleaner look, I agree with what was said above; loosen the clamps, rotate the mufflers so that all trumpets are parallel, then push the tips back in a bit. Cheers and Enjoy!
