How much should i ask for???

I'm gonna take my 08 M3 e92 into CarMax to sell. White on red (non-ext), 4,500 miles, DCT, Fully loaded (except winter package), 19"rims, garage kept (never driven in rain), perfect condition, not one scratch. Im thinking $50K. I bought it for $73. OUTCH! Any input would be helpful during this painful procedure

Do NOT take it to CarMax. I actually like them--bought 2 used family SUVs from them, but they will only give you Bluebook wholesale (auction) price for your car. That is simply unacceptable for a pristine car like your M3. Sell it privately in AutoTrader, Ebay, or similar. Even if you need a rather quick sale, there are people looking for an M3 in the condition yours is in. I'm sure a lot of folks are waiting for the first year E9xs to come off lease.

My 08 E92 M3 is loaded, has 6k mi, and is pristine, like yours. List 72.5k, paid 67k. I figure 1 yr depreciation of, say, 15k off list would put me at 57k ask. I may be overly optimistic, but 50k is rather low.

Offer it privately, not Carmax.

You are far, far too optimistic at $57k. More likely, it will be in the high $40k's. Why? There are LOTS of ads from dealers that I've seen asking about $50-52k for a 2008 with low mileage. A trade-in would mean mid-to-upper $40's. KBB has it around $51 for a trade-in, but that's Blue Book, not Black Book (auction prices). That's what the market is at right now. Sad but true.

As for the idea of selling it yourself, if you have the time, and you think you're in a market where you can sell your car, then that is, obviously, a better choice than trading it in. BUT, that takes time and costs money (listing fees, etc.). You'll waste a lot of time showing the car to every yahoo that expresses interest but really only wants a joy ride. And, you'll have to ensure you actually get paid - cleared cashier's check before turning the car over (some buyers balk at this, but that's the way it is). If you're willing to put up with all this, then sell it privately.

You would probably get more from your local BMW dealer than Carmax.

Talk to gas stations in your area. You can put your car in their lot with FOR SALE sign. I sold all my previous cars including lux cars (MB S500, Infiniti M45...) They usually ask for 50-200 a week.

Make sure you list ecery single deatil on the window. this was you can avoid some of the unnecessary calls

Ebay is all you need, and you only pay $120 if vehicle sells; not a bad deal. Pristine cars priced well usually sell quickly. I'd expect low $50s, but if it doesn't sell the first or second time, you can lower your reserve after that. Don't give it away initially; your car has almost all options, which is over 10 grand on top of base price. Good luck.

I'm afraid that's what you're stuck with, you might get $50k out of a private sale.

Carmax vs. Dealer

In 2002 I got $2,000 more from Carmax than my dealer offered for my '97 328is. My dealer clearly didn't want my E36. The used car manager glanced over at my car from 50 ft and gave the salesman a number. It was so bad that my salesman suggested that I go to Carmax. The dealer had moved to E46's as their entry level used car (which I discovered by looking at their used car lot). This time my dealer (a different one) started $500 below the appraisal that I got from Carmax a few days later. When we got down to the final negotiations, I mentioned my experience with Carmax the previous time and the dealer quickly upped their offer by $1,000. (they wanted my E46 M3 as it turns out).

I suggest that you go ahead and get the Carmax appraisal. It takes about 1/2 hour and is almost painless. I don't think you have much leverage with Carmax. It's a take it or leave it deal (big company - salaried employees - lots of controls). You may have some leverage with the BMW dealer (if they want your car). You could try, "$48K is too low, but I'll sell it to you now for $50K". My guess is that one or two thousand is all the potential upside that is there with a dealer based on what others have said about your car's current value.

If i had posted in seller section of this forum a week ago (or longer) i would have easily given you 50K (if not alittle more)....I was looking for a Coupe with DCT, Tech, Prem and 19' with low mileage.

I posted a WTB thread but got minimal replies and eventually ordered a 335i

lol nah, my vehicle is in the paint shop (thank you 800 #) and I put my CA through too much hell to turn back on him now

I am actually happy i chose the 335i....the M3 is such an amazing and awesome car but I dont need 400 hp and a gas guzzler for my daily driver

If i ever get the need for speed ill just buy a JB3, unfortunately there isnt much I can do about the difference in appearance but heck you cant see the outside of your car while driving

Wow $50k for a 2008? Thats a huge depreciation hit. Is it just normal or is there a reason?

That's NORMAL. A car drops 15-20% the second you drive it off the lot, and it depreciates 10-15% per year thereafter, depending on condition, mileage, etc. That means that a $65k M3 (sticker) will only be worth $52k or so shortly after purchase for a trade-in. That's REALITY. With the economy being this bad, I'm surprised these numbers have held up as well as they have - BMW isn't exactly selling a ton of M3's these days.

All those posing in here that they want "way more" than what they've been offered need to either wise up or start selling privately and hoping for the best.

Umm... I'm going to say that is actually high. 45K is a good offer for the car, negating the factor of the rarity of an m3. If you think about it, not many people are buying cars and not buying high end vehicles. For a 4 door at auction, you are probably a little high. i think the last auction slip I saw for a 4 door was like 42k.

Good luck man, I hope you get what you want for it. Sell it privately or negotiate when you trade.

I think 48k for the dealer is a good deal. Take a look out there, you are going to be hard pressed to get 50k for it.

You'll get between $45-$50k for your 2008 M3. Having DCT helps, but the value of the car has dropped like a rock. Sad that a lot of owners have lost around $20k since buying the car in less than a couple years, but thats what you get with buying new. I wouldnt do carmax man, they're going to give you the very minimum and they DO NOT negotiate. Sell privately or trade-in perhaps.
