It's expensive to get a really good paint job, not to mention time consuming. Factory paint is hard to beat as it's dip painted and baked before construction. To get it done right, the car needs to be stripped down considerably.

Honestly, it would be cheaper to get a new 2011 in a color you want vs. painting (assuming you get it painted correctly).

Don't do it. It will lower the value of the car when it's time to sell it.

yeah and plus they will have to disassemble all of the body panels to repaint it, and they will never put it back together as good as stock.

This has just been done in the UK. The prices are not relevant but it gives you an idea of the work involved.

Yes, I would go with a wrap. The dull black looks exceptional plus it can be removed if need be.

How do you figure this??? A new M3 is about $70k out the door. No paint job costs that much

Depends what color you want, if it's just a stock color it may not be worth it. If it's a custom color it's the only way. If you find a good quality shop the paint will come out much better than factory. Honestly the factory finish sucks on this car and it's all full of orange peel. You can easily paint a smoother better finish at a shop. But it will cost some $

Never put it back together as good as stock? what are you talking about. go to a qualified shop, it's not rocket science to disassemble a car and bolt it back together. Tons of shops are qualified for this work.

He has an 09 DCT, could easily get high 40's if not low 50's for it. Will cost a good 10k for a paint job, plus the tear down and have to disagree with you, it's very difficult to get all the door's put back on correctly, the moldings, windows have to be removed. It's not an easy process to get perfect. It can be done, but it's a lengthy process. Also, no matter what anyone says about how good the paint job is, resale will take a hit, thus lose some value on the car. So is it worth it to get a new one in the color you want (assuming stock colors are one he wants) for maybe 17k, or spend 10k on a new paint job, lose some resale (maybe 3-5k)? To me, if color was that important that you would think about stripping down your M3, I'd look at a new one. But that's just my opinion.

And it depends on why he wants a new paint job. Is his current one scratched up/dmg'd or does he just want a unique color? If it's just fixing his damaged paint and in the process changing colors, I'd probably just paint it. If it's that he just wants a different color, if stock colors appealed to me, I'd get a new M3 in the color I want.

I mean broken body clips, missing screws, misaligned parts, etc. Seems simple to "bolt it" back together, but few shops are actually that careful. And you can't really inspect their assembly work since most of it is hidden after they're done.

You need a better shop my friend. It can certainly be done fairly easy by a competent shop. It's not magic to assemble a car and line up the parts.

You should be able to sell yours in the $50ish, I got mine for $2k over invoice with all options Ed delivery for $63k. MSRP showed $75k.

Trade in the car or sell it first and order a 2011. What wrong with the Jerez black

Then why can't any BMW dealership I've ever been to put my car back together correctly? Door panels, seals, seats... they screw everything up!
