Truth about Jiffy lube

I am sure most of you change your own oil or go to the dealers...just stay the hell away from Jiffy lube

That's why you don't bring your car there, and if you do you say "No JUST an oil change, please!"
The thing that may not realize is that even some auto dealers like BMW will do some shady things.

in my early years of college, i knew a couple of people that worked at jiffy lube. i strongly suggest anybody that cares about their cars stay away from those quicky lube places.

LOL!

Nobody should be surprised.

The Auto industry has been full of scammers from the day the first car ever rolled off the line.

Automotive repair
Appliance repair
Home Repair

Are the biggest industry for scams and cheating because so many people don't know anything about cars, appliances and home repairs that it is easy to scam. Add to that some of the people that work in these industries and its easy to see why there are so many scams. And yes, BMW dealerships are not immune to this either. The fuel filter scam that dealers and Jiffy Lube like to do because it is often very hard to check and hard for you to tell that it was done. If someone tried to figure out how much money is lost every year in repairs it would be $$ Billions of dollars.

It just pisses me off to no end and is why I try to do as many repairs on my own as possible and when I can't, I do the "mark the filter" trick or watch them like a hawk.

The only way these scams would stop is if they states would permantly shut down these shops and fine the crap out of them.

+1

I used to take my volvo to those places because I could show up and have the oil changed without an apointment.... but I never would do any of the other numerous things they would try to upsell. They actually started the car after draining all the oil once too, that was lovely.

Guess it's true. If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.

Or find a mechanic that you can trust. I live in an apartment and don't have a place to change my own oil, so I take it to a mechanic I found through the local BMWCCA chapter.

Yeah, just do simple maintenance yourself. "What Auto Mechanics Don't Want You To Know," by Mark Eskeldon has these documented incidents. I read it in the school library.

Is an oil change easy to do on a bimmer? What do people usually pay to get it changed? I imagine you'd have to use the "premium" oil right?

7 quarts of BMW 5W-30 + the OE Filter cost me $38.50. It's the same as changing your oil on any other car.

My uncle owns his own shop, and cannot count the number of times that customers came to him with engine problems after comming back from Jiffy Lube....sometimes just wrong weight oil, and a couple times forgetting to put oil in the car or the drain plug back on!!! I would never trust to take my car there.

Hah, you're in Torrance too?

Yeah, the oil is not too hard to change yourself. The most difficult part is figuring out how to safely jack up your car so you can crawl underneath to drain the oil. I bought a couple of wheel ramps. However, since my car is so low, I jack it up (one side at a time), then slide my wheel ramp under the front tire, then lower the car back down onto it. This way I don't have to worry about my car falling down and turning me into gumby.

It's stuff like this that makes me want to take some mechanic class and learn all about car engines and how to do basic maintenance yourself.
