I think the x6 is massively overpriced for what it is (we own a Fx35 and looked at the x6 before buying), so I immediately vote M3. Think about this too.. how many days is there actually enough snow on the ground to warrant a year-long utility vehicle? Last winter here was pathetic.. maybe just 20 days where snow ruined (added to!?) the fun. The M3 will be a lot more fun those remaining 336 days. BTW, I was skeptical when I was looking at the M3, but it really is a car you love more each day. Its an amazing package and its hard to understand this car from a test drive. You need to live with it.

I have a similar dilemma this season.. I'm trying to decide whether or not I will use my m3 this winter.. I know it will perform well with snows, but do I want to submit it to salt/ice scratches, etc?!

You should ask the same question on the X5/X6 forum and see their response. Obviously you're going to get a biased response here.

simply because there will be 1 less M3 out there on the roads and I can still feel somewhat "special" for having one, I say get the X6!!..but with that said, I think you can conclude which car I'd suggest you go for in reality...

Agreed, coming from a mother of four who is in a sever pre mid life crisis I can only anticipate what is ahead and its not pretty. The only problem with the M is being from Chicago I'm going to put it to bed for the winter, I had it out last winter and couldn't bear hauling it through the ice and salt, not to mention snow even with snow tires. I say get rid of one of the SUV'S use that when the weather is bad and the M is resting comfortably in the garage or get something used to switch off with the M. I use my 330 for that. I could have had anything I wanted pretty much and I really love driving this car!!!

To each their own, but I don't agree about resting the M3 for the winter. It isn't a Bugatti Veyron, it's a top of the line 3 series. Unless you plan to keep this car for 30 years and expect it to be a classic, I say drive it as much as you can.

I totally get what you are saying but the winter's here are terrible and I just wouldn't enjoy the car as much for the next couple of years if it was exposed to all of that salt and snow. I'll do the same thing with the next car which probably won't be an M not that I don't love it. I already have 19,000 miles on it so I think I drive it as much as I can wouldn't you say.

Yes, the winters are terrible up here (I'm about 1.5 hrs north of you). I guess you are driving it a lot. I just find myself gravitating towards my M3 even when it is snowing. I have a 2007 4Runner that I basically ignore unless I take the dogs.

You already have a SUV, get the sedan. You can get a set of winter tires and use the M3 as a daily driver. In the summer, you can take it to the track

OP, like I have mentioned in some of the audi vs bmw thread and many called me fanboy for choosing the x6 over the s4. But here I have to go again. In your situation, I would buy the X6 50i. It is better for winter, more comfy, high ground clearance and thicker tires mean you don't need to worry about pot holes like when you are in the m3. X6 is a great looking vehicle and so far you can see some manufactures are trying to copy it. e.g acura zdx, lol. I'm sure in a few years, you gonna see more copy.

I love my m3 but honestly for a DD, the SUV is a better car. Especially when you enter territory where you are unsure what the road condition gonna be like. Plus you don't need to lower down to get in the x6, good for your back long term.

power/acceleration/handling, the x6 is no slouch either.

x6 is safer given it weight and size. every cars on the road now is pickup or SUV, so when there is a head on collision, most of the time the heavier car win. I know some will laugh at my reason, but who know sh1t happens right and at the end of the day, it is all about you comes out alive. watch this for some reference.

I myself debating between the m3 and x6m for my next car or i'm gonna get both. no, seriously. lol

OR I think if you can afford a lil more, get the x6m. that is one hell of a car and sure will make the mdx feel like a boat.

I was born in Pittsburgh. No question a M3 with snow tires can easily handle the winters there. Why get two suv's?

X6. If on a drive between the two cars you don't think the M3 gives you enough "thrills" to choose the M3 automatically, you need to be choosing the more practical car (the X6).

Congrats on the choice. Should be a great vehicle.

One last comment, though. In your other thread here:

http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=307691

you said:

Don't get me wrong, the X6 seems like it will work out great for your situation. But the above statement just edges a little too much toward over-rationalization IMHO. I don't necessarily think that even BMW themselves would agree with you there. And here's why:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121955

Now, I will say upfront that I fully understand this is a different situation due to the ability to run spiked tires ther. However, a lot of what they talk about in that article applies no matter what tires you run. So to me, this should be required reading for anyone who decides against an M3 based on their climate.

But I digress. Enjoy that X6, and have fun!

I did ask the X6 Forum

I did post this same question on the X6 forum. The majority there opted for the X6.

The day I had decided to get the X6, I took the M3 for another test drive. I ended up on the highway touching 100+mph ( I know that may make some of you cringe being that it was a new car not yet broken in). I had a huge smile on my face the whole time.

Afterward, I was sitting in the car in the dealer's lot weighing my options. It came down to a few things but what stuck in my head was:

1. How often will I put myself in a death-defying position driving this awesome vehicle?

2. Using the car as a daily driver, would I get frustrated not being able to unleash the beast?

3. While the last few winters haven't been severe in terms of the amount of snow we have gotten, do I really want to drive the car for a purpose not fully intended (I envy those of you who don't have the winter issue to deal with)

4. With two young kids, and a wife who doesn't know the first thing about handling a powerful sports car in the summer, and would not even consider driving it in the winter, the X6 was the logical choice....This was probably number one on the list.

Once I have the room for 3-4 cars, and I fully intend to in the next five years, the M3 will return to my serious consideration.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I have no regrets over this decision. Its the right one for me and my family at this time.
