Noise from tranny??

hi guys. when my car is warm or up to temp i get this clanky rattle noise at idle but when i push the clutch in then it is gone, let it back out then it comes back. it is a very disturbing noise. car runs fine though and shifts fine. i only hear it when it is up to temp and idle with clutch out

everything i have read and known points to the throw away bearing in the tranny

has anyone else had this noise and what was it??

any feedback would be great

thanks in advance

You don't drive with your foot resting on the clutch pedal, right? Having said that, that noise is there in ALL 6MTs man, so the better question is how loud. I can definitely hear it without the stereo on, but it's pretty subtle, and not intrusive at all IMO. If it's loud enough to bother you, it might not be normal. Best thing to do is listen to another M3 (dealer or a meet) so you can judge for yourself if normal or not. The good news is if there's something wrong, it's going to keep getting worse, so I wouldn't waste my time at a dealer unless it's obviously a problem. Remember these cars are noisy; welcome to the world of high performance machines .

FWIW I don't hear anything like this on my car and I have tried to listen for the sound that others describe.

I also don't recall ever hearing throwout bearing noises in my M3. I would ask how loud this noise is.

Mine does it. Can't hear it with the stereo on, but it's there. I'd describe more as a rhymic clicking noise and I hear it more when warm but it's there when cold too. Seems pretty common. All MTs I've had have had some kind of "noise" when the clutch is disengaged and the car in N. Not as loud, but always a different sound thank clutch engaged. I have no other transmission issues (such as 1st to 2nd grind) so I'm not going to worry about it.

Folks, depress your clutches while idling then release them and you should hear a noise. I heard it on THREE new M3s, so I know it's there. And on other performance cars is WAY louder (Z06, for instance), so it CAN be perfectly normal. Hard to diagnose sitting on a computer, especially without a sound file.

Granted, we don't know what is it (probably clutch itself, rather than throwout bearing), but should be pretty mild. Again, best way to know for sure IMO is to listen to another 6MT M3 or two.

What you are describing is clutch chatter.
Its normal, unless its really loud.

Mine makes the noise.. but like the others said, cant only hear it with the radio off. Took it to the dealership, and the mechanic knew exactly what i was talking about before he even started the car. The dealership is currently talking to BMWSA (south africa), an might get a new gearbox if it isn't resolved somehow.

I don't have it. The only sound difference between the clutch being engaged or disengaged is the change in the idle of the engine.

And how old are you? I'm starting to lose some hearing at my 47 (but still hear pretty darn well), hence the joke .

If you don't hear it, nothing to worry about .

no i never rest my foot on the clutch. people do that?? i would assume during racing right??

it can only be heard with the radio off and windows up and you can hear it in the cabin. not loud but there. outside the car it is harder to hear bc of the engine noise.

unfortantly i live in the boonies and there is no other M3's near me. i will maybe swing into a dealer next week and see if they got one there i can listen to

thank you for the info

oh man i feel so much better now bro. it is exactly like you describe. i really didn't want to go to the dealer i hate going there. i am always afraid of what they would do to my car, how they beat on them and how they wash them. i tip the SA extra extra money to always make sure they never wash it and i freak if there is more then a mile or two on it. i have seen horrible things at dealers

good to know someone else has this and it is normal

Unfortunately yes, and most of the time without knowing it. You should always rest your left foot on the dead pedal when not using the clutch. That way you know it's not on the clutch .

Normal then . You can sleep well now .
Next time you meet another M3 6MT driver listen to it for added piece of mind.

Glad I and the other guys could help!

In the scheme of transmission issues folks encounter with this car (I'm referring to the infamous 1st to 2nd grind at high RPM) if all we have is a little noise in N when the clutch is disengaged I think we're lucky.

And, it's not just your car--there have been a number of threads on this particular noise so it seems pretty common. I heard it on a couple of other 6MTs at a meet the other week too.

Like elp_jc said, high-performance car territory brings with it a bit more "noise" and rawness. Besides, I never hear the damn noise at 7-8K RPM anyway!

i am all good with some noise as long as it is normal lol

my car had a pretty good service record when i got it. i bought it with 9k miles on it and only thing it was in for was the 1,200 service and a idle valve at around 3k i think. then had an early oil service when i bought it

my midpipe i just added def drowns out this noise

thanks again
