Spacers --- Shimmy/problems

Anyone who added spacers, particularly the front notice any extra wheel shimmy?

I just added 5mm spacers to my front wheels, and the shimmy feels slightly more harsh. Also, if you add spacers do you need to do an alignment?

I have 15mm front and 12mm rear for about 2 months now and I haven't noticed any difference in regards to slop. The car feels tight just like day one.

i have the same problem before, with my 20mm spacer in front. When driving on freeway over 70's miles. the steering wheel shimmy badly. And now i have new set of rims with 5mm spacer. The steering wheel are tight & smooth. So i think shimmy problem should be your spacer or the rims balance.

No reason for an alignment after spacers, but if there was a shimmy present before - spacers will only exaggerate this more.

Let me know when you're in the area and we'll take a look.

I had a slight shimmy issue before hand, and I believe it is exaggerated. I guess I'll have to just wait until I throw the AD08s on! Thanks again Tom for getting spacers on my car in a short and timely fashion

There has been discussion on this in the forum previously. I was a "victim" of this and participated in the discussion. I got a small vibration after adding spacers. It turns out I just needed a very good rebalance and everything went back to normal. Give that a try.

Pardon my ignorance. What's "shimmy" and what does it do? I am about to get my 12mm RE spacers and having second thoughts now.

Is it must to have an alignment done after installing spacers? Any invaluable advice from senior and experience pros will be greatly appreciated.

Shimmy is when your steering wheel shakes when going at a certain speed. Usually it's from balancing problems but I do hear stories of people using spacers, particularly the larger ones and get this same problem.

Turns out, if you already have a balancing problem then it just worsens the effect until you balance your wheels correctly then it should go away.

For me speeds under 40 it's hard to tell but over 40 it gets worse until about 90mph then it dies down again. Personally I think that's a balancing issue and has nothing to really do with the spacers. I'll live with the shimmy until my new tires come in.

Thanks "MrHarris" for explaining.

What about alignment?
