Crashed M3

My buddy ran into a car with his M3 yesterday. All airbags were deployed. The other car ran a red light. I know the pic isn't great, but any ideas whether this damage is severe enough for the car to be deemed totalled?

Yes very very likely. I just totalled my 2009 Infiniti Fx. They basically will see how much it will take to fix. keep in mind airbags are 8k on their own. So its good they were out. Plus the damage infront will be over 40k atleast. If the damage is beyond efficient repair they will call it a loss (compared to the same replacement price). They will then look at how much it will take to give him a replacement or MSRP or dealer invoice. the lesser of the 3 options above will be given to him. So yea probably totalled. Which is good right?

Also if he is injured he can go to a good lawyer who will put him in a massage course for 2 days a week for free for a year then force the insurance company for alot more than just the accident money.

OP: Are you sure that's not your crashed M3 in the Pic?

The reason I ask is because on your sig it says, "2008 E92 M3/Silverstone Metalic/Black Novillo Leather/Carbon Leather/M-DCT/ZPP/ZTP/19"/iPOD/HD Radio/Enhanced sound"

Below your avatar, it says "2002 M3"? And your avatar has a pic of a silverstone e92 m3?

You don't have to feel embarassed if it's your M3......Sh$t happens with everyone.

Regardless of who's M3 it was, as long as the person(s) in the vehicle are ok, that's all that matters.

Ouch - that sucks. Totaling a car is an interesting debate.

What really sucks is that thru no fault of your "buddy" (the other driver being at fault) potentially he could end up driving a "fixed" M3. And if he wanted to sell it to someone and buy a new car in the future he could be screwed. I certainly wouldn't buy a repaired M3 no matter how well the repair job is.

A real crappy situation. A big devalue of your car if they don't total it.

Thank God, this wasn't my car. When my friend was looking for a used M3, it just so happened that he found a great deal on one that was the same color as mine. He called me yesterday and told me, I don't have to worry about having the same color car as him.

He walked away with some minor bruises

I would say it's certainly approaching totaled, the only thing that might hinder it is the car's value still being high. Best of luck...hope everyone was alright.

Did your friend jack-rabitted out of the intersection or did he wait a few seconds to make sure nobody would try to run the red light in the perpendicular direction? You would be amazed how many accidents would be averted if you would wait to see if there are red light runner before engaging yourself in an intersection. The driving code is quite clear on that subject you are supposed to engage in an intersection only if you are reasonably sure there is no traffic coming out of lanes with red lights.

Definitely....Out here in DFW, every 10th light there's some nutjob that goes running through ... For the past few years now, I always have a "pause" before I go through the intersection..
Its a bit of a pain to look everytime, so I just give a 1-2 sec delay before hitting the gas..
I have avoided two disasters already in 5 years..(I'm talking about serious T-bone accidents)

Ever heard of karma? If he is hurt then he should get what he deserves. If he isn't seriously hurt, which it sounds like he isn't, then he should be thankful and move on. The reason we have to pay so much damn $$$ for insurance is because people try to take advantage of the system all the time and it pisses me off. Anyone one doing this or recommending someone else to do it should get a life.

Probably totaled. From what I have been reading about the 5 series is that all the aluminum in the support structure has made it very expensive to repair and that front end damage that might seem relatively minor is able to total a car. I would be surprised if we didn't have a lot more aluminum.

I agree. I think someone should be fairly compensated for their loss, but I can't stand people who try to milk the system.

Isn't the engine alone worth $30 grand? Not including cost of repair it looks like this is a definite write off. Glad your friend was okay though.

You should come to Korea where you'll hardly see a taxi not running a red light.

All air bags deplyed = Totaled. They are very expensive to replace and once you consider the other damage that is it.

Not to thread jack , but I just picked my car up last week after it returned from Euro-Delivery. This morning I had an accident and ran into the back of someone. Side street entry onto a highway feeder. Guy in front of me went (or so I thought he did) and I stopped at the stop sign. I was looking left and there were no cars coming. I have DCT so tapped the pedal and the car started moving forward. I was just about to accelerate and CRUNCH. The guy had pulled out and for some reason stopped. I was looking left and never caught sight of him in my periphial vision. Anyway, to make a long story short there was NO DAMAGE. Not a scratch. Not a dent. Nada.

The plastic material on the bumpers did a great job. I got lucky.
