America was founded as a constitutional republic. It was never intended to be a democracy, yet in some ways it has devolved into a democracy.

Popular vote a good thing? Are you kidding? The popular vote has included things like witch burning and the like. The population of american is probably the most uninformed in the civilized world. How many people were pushed into the voting lines to vote just because obama was black? This is crazy. You say the founding fathers didn't want a few deciding what's best for everyone, but everyone having a say is no good either? What are you proposing?

Buy in a constitutional republic you still have people voting, and thus majority rules.

The distinction between a Democracy and a Republic is a funny one since both require involvement from the electorate to vote for its representatives. Yet the only way to determine who will represent the people comes from the majority. There is no way around it.

A republic was created to prevent the majority from suppressing the minority. Yet if elected officials are chosen by the majority who thus create a consititution...was a republic really created in the first place?

I guess you can go about it by having the people directly frame a consitution, but how logical is that in a country of over 300 million people?
