E92 Transmission

In your opinion, whats better...a manual or the double clutch tranny? Does the double clutch give a lot of problems after a certain time becaue i heard numerous stories of the smg going out in bmws.

Welcome to bimmerpost!

I suppose you're talking about the E92 M3, so I'm moving your thread to m3post.

As to the long term reliability of DCT, it's way too early to tell. One thing is for sure though: In case something really goes wrong and you're out of warranty, an replacement transmission will be expensive.

In case you're talking about already known problems of the DCT not being related to long term usage, please use the search function. There's even a sticky thread on the known lag issue.

Best regards,
south

Whereas the E46 M3 SMG used the standard MT, clutch and flywheel (and had some issues with short clutch plate life) the E92 M3 DCT uses multi disc wet clutchs similar to the ones you get in the limited slip diff. Its a sealed for life gearbox so hopefully it will last the life of the car.

if you have frequented the m3 forums, you will have come across the contradiction man. The net of his posts is that "that which you own is the best"..... well in regards to the dct, which BMW held as a highly acclaimed,, blah blah (advertisement campaign) , have already slated its demise. What does that tell you??? now, before you answer, have a few and think hard!!!

It seems irresponsible to me to tell this to a brand new member without mentioning that it is completely unofficial and unconfirmed. If anything, the presence of DCT in the newest BMW concept suggests that there is still life left in the technology.
