CNET gave the Asus a substantially higher rating. I'd read the reviews and form my opinion from that and the specs.

I have an asus and I love it. I had bought a $2500 Sony Vaio a few years ago and let me tell you, that thing was the biggest piece of shit. So I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a computer again. I was going back and forth between an HP and my Asus. I decided on the asus because it was $500-$600 and its got the same, if not better specs than some computers twice or triple the price. Plus, I've only read good things about Asus. I had one issue with getting the wireless internet working, so I called them. Suprisingly I got someone from this country...and he was able to help me on the first try...I was amazed, based on other experiences I've had...I now try to avoid all Sony products whenever I can... I told him, "dude, I've had so many issues with my Sony and the tech support people can never help me. I'm pleasantly suprised how quick you were able to help me."

My bro is the computer tech at the Staples by my house and he recently went off to college and bought a new laptop...an Asus from Best Buy...

Asus FTW!!

mine is the Asus X83V.. my bros is the Asus U81..I dont remember which HP I was looking at, but it was pretty much the same, it just had a bigger hard drive and longer battery life.. I think the Asus had better graphics and was faster, so that was one of the things that swayed me.. but the main thing I liked was that everything I read about Asus was good, and they were a smaller, relatively new company.
