I drive it to and from work everyday, 6 days a week. Granted, it is a short commute and I do go to work at 5 in the morning so I get to enjoy opening her up a bit more in the top end.

I have a bunch of cars in the garage, so use the M3 usually on shorter trips around the city.
Its a strictly summer car for me, so I usually enjoy it with the top down.
That sonorous sound of the V8 always puts a grin on my face

I would use it as a daily driver but now that I have a SUV I use that instead. Plus my SUV gets better gas mileage. So I'm just saving miles on my m. =)

it's a great DD, i often carpool with my colleague and he has a M3 with DCT. for those of you who has been to ShangHai, im sure you know how bad the traffics are... lets just say the seats kept my butt quite comfortable for the 2-3 hour daily commute.

if we take this thinking a little further...

multiply your commute X 3 = speed you must travel for your commute to fall within 20 minutes!!!!

(20 mile commute X 3 = 60mph)

PROBLEM SOLVED! (i knew my math lessons would come in handy someday! )

I have the e46 m which is less comfortable than the e9x m, but i drive 3 hours daily with no problem whatsoever. In fact, i don't think I can drive that long if I'm in a less exciting car.

I use my M3s daily. That's the beauty of these cars. Daily drivers + track beast all in one package. No other car does so many things as well.

I used to use my M3 as a commuter. That is one of the most comfortable cars on the road today. Also, mine is a 6MT and I used to drive in heavy traffic with it. No bothers for me. Only thing is the fuel consumption. My commute is 70 miles round trip to work and home. I am only averaging 15.3 mpg and trying to get it higher.

With no rain now, I take my CBR 1000RR almost everywhere since I get 40mpg for it, can drive in the carpool lane, and can lane split. The M can't do that, but is waiting for me in the garage when I get home. =)

DD for me
no EDC but with 18" wheels
drives great
even my wife commented on how its more comfortable than my Audi A5 with sports suspension and 19" wheels

avg mpg is 15.2
but so what?
i fill up for about $37
and that lasts a work week
if i had a 25mpg car i'd save what a few dollars a week?
so what
at the expense of a lot of smiles in the M3 :0

My manual transmission E90 M3 is my daily driver here in So. Cal. I absolutely love it love it love it! W the Bluetooth, iPod, sunroof and the V8 I can stay connected, hear my favorite driving mantras, take in some air and travel at the maximum speed traffic or my ticket counter can bear. I have zero problem rowing the manual transmission in anything but the heaviest traffice which is just a drag for anyone no matter what they're driving...Option the car out and drive it every day!

I did use mine as a daily drive come commuter and it filled each purpose reasonably well. It's definitely a car better suit to shorter journey, well from my experience because I didn't find the seats overly comfortable and actually give me back pain after a hour in the seat. This might be down to a combination of very offset pedals in relation to steering wheel which I feel the seat angle is set up to most.

P.S.
It's funny but every single BMW I have ever owned has always fulfilled it's role by all accounts superbly but none have I ever fully warmed to in the same manner as I have to some other brands. I don't know why this should be because they all steer well, go well and have a sweet balance. Maybe it's the styling both outside and in that doesn't quite appeal to me but each time I leave the brand I say I will never return only to do so in a few years time.

It must be a love/hate relationship I have with BMW.
