How do you adjust the level of your headlights?

Hey all, I just had Eibach lowering springs installed on my car, and now my lights are aiming way too high. Low beam gets me brighted...and high beam gives me great lighting of the huge trees in our neighborhood . How difficult is to adjust them, and how do I do it? Thanks in advance!

Our lights are self leveling and can be recalibrated by the dealership. I had the same problem from the day I purchased the E90 M3 and I really don't believe just putting in aftermarket suspension components will cause it, especially only lowering the car by, what, 2-3 in? I bet you have a faulty part like I did, but it finally decided to go on you now. The dealership will correct it under warranty...if they don't go to a different dealership that will.

It's actually pretty easy man, but need to tell you I haven't tried it, so you might want to confirm this, or mark the thumbwheels so you can set them back to stock. By the way, the only other choice for those thumbwheels is horizontal adjustment, so doesn't hurt to try IMO.

Open your hood and look for the thumbwheels right next to the cap you pop to change DRL/cornering bulbs and the yellow sticker in there; can't miss them. I'd turn one a full turn and see if it adjusts vertically or horizontally, and go from there. But I need to say it seems very strange you need to adjust your headlights that much after dropping all 4 corners. Make sure your self-leveling feature is working before touching anything.

Yes, something doesn't seem right about this. If you lowered the car the same on all 4 corners, the headlights shouldn't be pointing higher.

Eibach is not the same front and back for lowering

There is a big plastic screw on top of the headlight, it's got a grip around it that looks like you can turn it with your fingers. That screw will adjust the height of your lights.

Hey guys, many thanks for helping me out here. First I checked to make sure that the auto-leveling was functioning properly which it was. Next I located the adjusters and turned it one full turn at a time until they dropped (three turns total). I'm still at a loss as to why my headlights were aiming high rather than low .

YES! I noticed this too.. when my car got dropped by a set of Eibachs the headlights aim a little to high. I'm going to do this adjustment too

anyone know how I can confirm that my auto-leveling is working? I too have the same issue after installing my eibachs, i constantly get flashed by incoming traffic.

Headlamp Adjustment

Hi guys I hade a set of Schnitzer springs fitted on my car .Similar problem
the headlamps had to be refocused...thanks for the info my car all sorted out.

You sir are spot on. I have adjusted mine and it is as you say, Very easy. I did mine in the garage with the door closed, so i could see it raise or lower. But it is a no brainer. I moved mine up for a better field of vision.

You shouldn't have had to manually adjust it. Our lights are self leveling. See this thread

I adjusted them for personnal preference. And self Leveling yes, Self adjusting no. Otherwise the adjustment screw would not be there. I do mine to get rid of the factory Road Crown adjustment. High enough to see further down the road, Low enough not to bother on comming traffic.

I have raised the headlight level on ever BMW I have owned. BMW tends to point the headlights a little further down than I like.

I have done this on every car I have owned as well. I like to see whats ahead of me, Not so much the road beneath me.

I feel the lights always point just a bit to low from factory, so I always just adjust mines a little bit higher, I never really ever got high beamed before, so I think it is fine.

You guys need to read the thread above. It should be a sticky since this comes up all the time. If you want to see if the auto leveling is working, you need to push the front self adjusting arm up and down and the headlight should move with moving the arm.
It's the REAR self adjusting arms that get installed wrong all the time, which results in the headlights pointing way too high.

I don't know about this self leveler. I don't remember unhooking mine and when I look under the car it looks to be hooked up right. Yet I had to adjust my lights when I installed the springs
