yeah this will sell alright. all 48 of them or whatever. lol. What a stupid idea to make a specialist car like M3 to appeal to poseuers. Make speial edition AW 335i and sell tons of it in SoCal (black 20s, slammed to the ground with huge CF lips and snow white angel eyes) - that's gonna be a better business model. If you want a special edition of M3 - make a fackin CSL!... how stupid are those guys..

Well, barring the outbreak of WW3 or some freak global breakdown of financial services, I will be putting in an order for a Monte Carlo Blue M3 Edition in about 3 weeks time. (Unless I can get some info on RD sometimes soon.)

I don't see why it's such bad value - you get individual paint, one outside the normal range at that and the 19" oem wheels. All the black accent bits I know can be bought separately, but I'm 10000% certain I won't have fitment issues with these so I'm happy with that. The mirrors are a nice touch and to be honest apart from may be a very subtle lip and whiter angel eyes, that's as far as I'm going to go with the exterior.

I don't consider myself a poser - I'd have chosen a Cayman, were I one - but my original plan was a SG and then to black everything out anyway. Then I was thinking of getting wheels that are 1.)black and 2.)look similar to the oem cos they look nice anyway. Plus while I like SG, I just wanted a more unique colour to my M3 (they all seem to be 90%AW, 4.5%Jb, 4.5%Jzb and 1%SG + I didn't really like any of the two blues). Had a mind to go with yellow, but Dakar Yellow seems too pale for my liking. Saw the pic of the Monte Carlo Blue and I fell in love. Does that make me a poser? I don't know...

But surely this is similar to BMW offering individual colours and individual trim... why would this be different?

I fully agree that BMW should have come up with a CSL and the idea of a limited run model with mainly exteior changes might upset the purists, but if you just take it as what it is - $,$$$ for exterior mods done back at the factory plus custom paint, then it's not so bad. I don't think it should be viewed in anyway as an alternative to a CSL, they're just not making the CSL yet, and they're not making claims that this is a new CSL

Personally, I wouldn't bother with an AW version, but the blue and the yellow I think are pretty neat.

Oh, and iirc, the exhausts will come in black also which will do nicely till I get my Gintani or Arkapovic (still haven't decided).

Still, even though a lot of the modded M's here on this forum pretty much look the same its not like they are on every street corner. I'm in the chicago subs and in the city and I haven't seen one like mine yet.
You are running on pricey BBS LMs though.

H&R sport springs are what, $400-500? Matte black grilles ~$100?

I dunno. I still see this as a rip. But yes, I can see the typical consumer that's not interested in modding finding this appealing. I still think this 'Edition' model could have been executed better.

Okay, from the BMW UK configurator and the Evolve site:

19" oem = +1,240 UKP
Individual paint = +775 UKP
Eibach springs = +228 UKP (need to add fitting costs)

I can't find any UK site for the exterior bits, but from www.jlevisw.com:
Side markers (matte black) = 64.99 USD
Front grille (matte black) = 69.99 USD
64.99+69.99 = 134.98 USD = 79.74 UKP

Just these three add up to 2,322.74 UKP

The "Edition" package adds 2,500UKP so that's -177.26 UKP difference which amount to about 300 USD (nearly exactly).

Now the Eibachs are relatively cheap - one could go with H&R or Dinan, then you'd have to figure in install costs. So even if you do it yourself, the 300 USd difference will be swallowed up pretty soon. You'd still have to get some mirror covers (if you want it exactly like the "edition") and powder coat the wheels. Still you might not get Dakar yellow or the Monte Blue. And the black exhausts.

Basically, IMHO, it's not as huge a rip-off as many may feel.

It looks like the exhaust tips are also black.

I don't care about another dime dozen alpine white E92 or another shade of more of the same blue color. Estoril is the only blue that matters. Now what I am interested is:

Metallic paint costs extra so if you get MCB or DKY, you would save another $550.

Now I understand why BMW denied me a DY just a month ago. They reserved it for this special edition joke. Sure I like these adds on but I think they should have been available as OEM from the start or maybe 2010 model year available OEM options but not markup type exclusivity. One or two US tuning shops got factory DY as a special favor two months ago. BMW marketing is mixing legitimate exclusivity with wait and markup type of exclusivity. I bet they will have this available in the US just wait and switch marketing game. This to me just adds arrogance to the brand name which is already tainted by it. Listen to me BMW: How about a DCT fixed special edition ? or a CSL ? bastards.

Between the late LCI for coupes and lack of Dakar Yellow..... I am honestly tired of waiting.
I was on that path too.

It is a rip off because the added cost for BMW to produce these is almost non existant

I'm not entirely clear as to what policies are regarding custom colours with BMW, but it would really surprise me if they victimised you personally. Again, I don't know their policies and I certainly don't know what happened in your particular case, but I doubt BMW the company had it in for you in particular.

Not knowing their cost structures, I can't comment much more, but I feel that a great number of things should be no-cost options. But we seem to happily pay for most other things already. Crap like USB interface, comfort access and so forth. I'm not saying they _should_ charge for these things, but it doesn't seem out of the ordinary for them to do so.

Well, it's your money and you can feel how you like about spending it. All I'm saying is that if you were to make your own M3 look like this - providing they let you have the colour - it would cost at least this much. And from that standpoint, it's not a rip off.

Regarding the marketing game, I'm not sure what's going on. While I like the look of the "Edition" M3's I feel it's confusing. There will soon be an LCI on the E92 and E93 and so why introduce this now? Why not do so afterwards? The only answer I can think of is that they've got too many pre-LCI bits left due to not having sold as many M3 coupes as they had hoped and now need to flog the last few off. Since it will be hard (to sell pre-lci) after showing everyone an LCI at Frankfurt (end of Sept) they've come up with some rather weak incentives for people to snap up the last of the pre-lci cars.

You can call this arrogance or whatever you like, but I feel they're in trouble with M3's and 3 series in general. I read some where that the next generation 3-series will be introduced a year ahead of schedule - 2011 - due to weak sales of the current model. When the board decides something major like that, there will be f*ck ups. Sadly, I think M3 fans will be short-changed by it.

HEY NOT FAIR, I thought the AW really showed off the roof and I like the look even though I wasn't a fan of white cars in general. As far as being a dime a dozen I've only seen one in the area to begin with. HOWEVER, I AGEE the next color is Yellow, be it on an M3 or Porsche. On topic though, isn't it more fun to do the modding yourself, to use a women's analogy it would be like having a personal shopper pick out your outfit from shoes to purse instead of the thrill of doing it yourself. I don't think I could have said that better.
