Previous M5 Owners...

Do you miss your beast? I traded in my E60 due to end of warranty issues and thought I fell in love with the E90 M3. But today it really hit me how I miss the sheer thrust of the M5. I suffered the same dilemma when I traded my E39 M5 for the E46 M3. I thought the V8 in the E90 would suffice, but damn...I'm really missing the beast.

Personally, I love the M5, but it's just too big for me. It would be a tough decision between the M5 and E90 M3, but money also plays a huge factor...the m5's exhaust note is just ridiculous

Is your M broken in yet?

btw, I see you're a doctor. If you don't mind me asking, what specialty are you?

I bought an M3 because I lived in an area with tight parking and narrow streets. Now I live somewhere with more room and I keep thinking about the M5.

Implant Dentistry. Got 15k miles, and suddenly it just seems slow...I think it is a result of seeing a beautiful Interlagos Blue M5 today and I got nostalgic.

I'm a track junkie, and I instruct for the BMW Clubs. The M5 was just too big for my tastes for the track. I have a 4yr. old son, so I needed 4 doors. Don't get me wrong, I love the handling of the M3 on the track, just miss that unending thrust when you drop the hammer. Maybe I need the supercharger...

I have driven an M5 on several occasions but never really got on it. Is there THAT much difference acceleration? I know it has more hp but it weighs more too. What are the 0-60 times on both? 0-100?

Before the M3 I had a 550 sport. That car was more comfortable for sure, but it was too big to handle anything like the M3. I never felt the M5 handled like a sports car, but rather a big, heavy sports sedan.

The M3 is faster than you can drive on the road. Was the M5 so much faster or was it just that it sounded fast.

My car doesn't "seem" as fast as it first did, but that is just because I'm driving it every day. I jumped in my brother's X5 4.8 the other day and IT felt like a barge.

You would be surprised at the weight difference between the two cars, not as much as you'd think.
No question, the M3 is much more nimble and athletic.
But when the M5 is kept over 5000rpm, it feels like it's going to rip out of its skin, and it keeps pulling. Not many cars are able to keep up.
So, yes, there is THAT much difference.

I still have my E34 M5 and E90 M3. They are different beasts. The M3 is fast and flawless, but I still love the straight six on my M5.

Get tired of this car then upgrade to the new M5 whenever that comes out.

Add all the basic bolt-on mods, and you will be impressed I bet. I hope to gain 50-60 hp when I'm done modding my e90 M3.

Just went from an E34 1993 M5 (with 216K on it) to a new M3. You are right. The E34 M5 straight six had a smoothness, lack of vibration and power in the upper revs that is not matched by the M3 and I miss it.

Also, I consistently got 19 mpg city/suburbs and 28 mpg highway in the E34 M5. Now with the M3, it is 15 mpg city/suburbs and 19 mpg highway. But the M3 is truly an awesome car nonethless. If I wanted fuel mileage in a four door sedan, I would have purchased a Ford Fusion Hybrid.

So, yes, there is THAT much difference.

I drove them M5 a lot at the 2 day M school and there is NOT much difference. Perhaps over 100 mph the M5 shines , but certainly not a huge difference. In fact, it was unanimous among the 16 people in the class that the M3 sedan was their favorite car. Even the instructors were partial to the M3. The M5 was my second favorite car, but it kept overheating on everyone which sucked.

Stick with the better car, the M3. When the new M5 comes out, then the M3 will not be the best M car anymore and then trade up.

I was going to say, Valencia hardly has tight parking and narrow streets. Probably not too many M5's up there either, M3's for that matter too.

Just wait for the 555hp 500tq F10 M5. That should give you the "thrust" you are looking for

M3 and m5 are evenly fast to the quarter mile. But in fourth gear and on the m5 keeps pullling.

I miss the M5... And every time I drive my friends 550 it sort of reminds me of that suede beast.

The M3 is a badass car. But on the highway the M5 is king. And I like being king of the highway. If I were to pit my M5 against the M3 in a straight line, the M3 would get absolutely pillaged. Not to mention SMG III shifted so fast with the software I had it felt like I was getting slammed in the rear by a Mack truck with every upshift.

M5 is too big and heavy, M3 is by far the better platform. If you miss the power (as I do) mod the hell out of it and you kick an M5s ass any day. Of course, it all depends on what you want.
