HELP! DYNO gurus, have some basic dyno hookup questions..

I'd like to bring my car to a local dyno (Dyno Dynamics), but they haven't done any M3's so they asked me to do a little research. He wanted to know:
  1. Where to tap off of for RPM signal wire
  2. Is the engine firing sequential fuel injection or batch?
  3. What injector wires does the e92 M3 use, Ev1 or Ev6 (or other?!)
  4. Best place to tie down? He mentioned tying down with the front and rear control arms. Is that the best way?

Any other words to the wise to get an accurate reading?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I've never seen a Dyno done and I don't know this stuff about our cars, so there you have it. Thanks for any help!

Ok... Front & Rear Control Arms are fine to tie down. I've also used Rear Control Arms... and Front 'Tow Hook' insert. If tieing down the rear by Contol Arms, make sure straps are not against muffler, typically... this means do not cross the rear straps.

You can pick up Tach Signal from Orange Coil Wire. It is located beneath the black engine covers... the Passenger side is easiest to remove... and I would recommend removal before going to dyno. (Like after it has cooled over night)... no bolts to remove... it just 'snaps' on & off.

Once you've gotten the black plastic cover off... remember... be careful, calm and patient. (I also remove oil filler cap to increase room slighthly). You'll be pulling the cover 'forward' for removal.

Once you get the cover off.. you'll see your four coils going directly into each spark plug hole. They have a rubber protective cover, just behind the 'clip' area... peel back the rubber 'sleeve'... and it will expose a White Wire and an Orange Wire. Use the 'spark plug wire' pickup... to put on the Orange Wire... and Tach Pick up will work perfectly.

Car is definitely not 'Batch' Fuel injection... haven't seen that since late 80's... early 90's with the Tuned Port Camaro's & Corvettes!

Hope this helps!
Dave

Ok cool, thanks SCCA. This is awesome info. I have a couple follow up questions.

Are there two covers, or does the top cover just unsnap, then slide forward towards the front of the car to remove? You say to unsnap the cover, then you talk about another cover that removes forward. This may be obvious once I look at it, but just thought I'd ask.

W.r.t the orange tach (RPM) wire.. the "spark plug wire" you refer to, is that the same as the "tach pick up"? I'm assuming this just a clamp that goes over my wire and inductively detects the RPM, or will we have to splice it to get metal-metal contact?

Thanks man!

I just took some 'clear' photos tonight... of what you'll be looking for... I'll get them uploaded in the morning... and all will be simple!

There are 'two covers'... but only one per side... so you'll just be removing one black cover... The 'one cover' on the passenger side... when you snap it to remove it from the 'valve cover' you will then 'pull it forward' towards the front of the vehicle to remove it the rest of the way. It is too big to just 'pull straight up'... so you have to maneuver it a bit.

The Spark Plug Wire/Tach Pick up... yes... from the Dyno Operator's perspective... he will know... once you see the image tomorrow... you'll just tell him... put your 'tach pick up' 'HERE' And he will say 'Thanks!'... and you'll be set!

Absolutely no splicing... no cutting... no nothing... just once you see the pics... I think it will help greatly!

Dave

Ok, here are the pics...

The First Pic, is the 'Black' Spark Plug / Coil Wire Plastic Cover that I was talking about.

The 2nd Pic, is what's beneath that cover, showing you 2 of the 4 Plugs / Coils & their Rubber Boots.

The 3rd Pic, is with one of the Coil Wire Rubber Boots, pulled away from the Connector, to expose the Orange Wire, that your Dyno guy will put his Tach Pick up 'around'.

Let us know how it goes! And if you need anything else... let me know.

Dave

You don't have to peel back the boot. I know on the Dynojet it worked just fine clamping right over the black flexible boot.

King Tut is correct... if their pickup can filter out the other two (most can)... you can just try over the entire boot... if not... when you peel it back...it's the orange wire you need.
