quick question..how do I kow if I have the most up-to date nav software for my 2005 E46? I'm seeing screen shots online that look different then the interface I have..is my software outdated?

There was menu to see nav software and map versions in the screen. But I forgot.
You will find the answer from www.m3forum.net/m3forum a lot faster than here.
That's where the E46M3 crowds hang out.
