Question Questions about euro delivery

OK, planning the trip to pick my my M3. Where is the port that you drop off the car at? Does is make sense to fly back to the US from Munich or is there a closer airport?

How long did everyone take to browse the museum once you arrive at the Welt to take delivery?

I was planning on flying in the night before. Spend 1 day at the Welt. Drive towards Nurburg that night. Then I plan to spend a couple of days around Nurburg to include driving the nurburgring. I know I'm limited to 5500RPM but its the only chance I'll ever get to be on the 'ring.

All together - 4 to 5 days.

Any good places on the way to Nurburg to stop? Any warnings or suggestions?

First of all, can I come with you?

There are a bunch of places you can drop off the car. Most people that do the ring drop back in Munich or Amsterdam. Check out the wiki over at the ED forum on Bimmerfest. I picked up our M3 sedan two months ago with my wife and kids. It was a great trip but I would have loved to do the ring.

We got in early Thursday morning and did some sight seeing around Munich. We picked up the car on Friday morning and spent the day touring the factory and the museum. You can pick up the car and do a quick run through the museum in about three to four hours. I would highly recommend doing the factory tour which is another 2 and a half hours.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you need a copolit

I agree with the above. Frankly, it's too much to do the museum, pick-up and factory tour all in one day. I ended up going to the museum the day before I dropped off the car at Garching. Unlike the museum where you can spend as much or little time as you please, the factory tour is guided and takes 2 and 1/2 hours.

Once your ED order is complete, you will receive a guide package in which you will find a check-in time at the premier lounge. If you must do all three in one day, ignore the check-in time, and just go to the Welt early in the morning to get your free passes for the museum and factory tour.

You can drop off at several different cities. My family and I ended up in Paris and the process was very easy at the Paris CDG airport.
If you are going to end up at the 'Ring, you are better off flying out of Frankfurt am Main (FRA).

More on how to get some miles or KM before the ring below.

If you are self guided and/or have a patient travel companion you can spend hours in the updated museum and still not see everything. It is very well done. If you are there in August, the plant will be shut down, but if not, get a factory tour. It will be yours for the asking.

After you drive out of the delivery area, to attend the museum, you'll need to valet the car - right away- unless you have a later afternoon delivery.
In that case you should do the tour and museum first.

A memorable sight to see is the Stelvio pass in the Italian alps. It is an attainable drive to there from Munich. The Alps are breathtaking and well worth the trip.

http://www.google.com/maps?f=d&sourc...ly&ie=UTF8&z=8

From there, you should overnight near Stelvio and then shoot for some of the automotive sights in Stuttgart (if competitive German brands command ypur respect).

Perhaps try for Heidelberg to look from the Castle overlooking the beautiful town.

http://www.google.com/maps?f=d&sourc...,14.095459&z=7

From either of those spots to the Nurburgring, you'll actually have near break-in miles on the car by the time you get to the "Green Hell"...

http://www.google.com/maps?f=d&sourc...59&ie=UTF8&z=9

Do you know the track at all from Gran Turismo or Xbox? Take a look and see if you can get all of that driving done. It'll blow your mind!

Your US spec radio will only tune stations manually.
Autostore presets will not work.

Also: If you want Bluetooth, be certain to get BMW ASSIST.
I screwed up thinking it was included in the technology package - assuming that I had smartphone readiness. Doh!

Congrats...the Ring is closer to Frankfurt, so I'd recommend doing the dropoff there instead of driving back to Münich.

I'm picking up my M3 in August. Here's my basic itinerary/driving routes: http://************/cz34aq

8 total days for me. Highlights include:

- The basic Munich stuff (BMW Museum, factory tour, etc)
- Drives through Sudelfeld-Bergstrasse, Wallbergstrasse and Kesselbergstrasse.
- Tourist spots at Castle Neuschwanstein and Porche Museum
- And of course, the finale...Nürburgring!

I'm dying right now waiting....gahhhhh....

Thanks for the info! Its helping me a lot. I will be going alone to the pick up so I guess I could take someone along to get the 2-for-1 plane ticket deal.

I'm thinking I'll just drive back to Munich, hang out at the museum until its time to go to the airport.

Don't do it...it's a scam. 1900.00 for the ticket, and no upgrades available, I got two tickets for my trip in July for 1400.00 round trip and I can upgrade if I want.

Your car will arrive here faster if you drop in Munich, and I highly recommend practicing on XBOX before you go. It wont prepare you for the elevation changes, but at least you'll know which way the road turns

Also, I agree with Dave. I did the Davos Stelvio thing last year with the S5, and I highly recommend it as well. One of the things you will notice is that you can get to places much faster than here, so come back south to southern Bavaria after the ring and explore. The pic in my sig is from Hoenverfen, and it's one of the collest places I've ever been. I will also lend other advice if you are interested.... when are you going? I'll be picking up on July 4!

How close is the Munich drop off to the Welt/Delivery Center? If I do ED, I will fly have to fly into Munich and out the same day.

Is this the Munich drop off?

I'm thinking I'll just drive back to Munich, hang out at the museum until its time to go to the airport.

I went solo, did the museum, tour and delivery in one day. In fact did it the same day I flew in. Drove to Salzburg and passed out.

Did Grossglockner, Dolomites to Reutte in one day. Long drive but so much fun. Castles, drove through the northern part of the black forest stayed in Baden Baden. Did the roman bath, then headed to Porsche Museum (blows away BMW's), then off to 'da Ring. Ring taxi, then a few laps myself, over a 2 day period (highlight of the trip), drove to Rotenburg (walled city) stayed the night relaxed, headed to Munich the next day for drop off at Log in Log Out, stayed at Movenpick by the airport, flight out int he morning.

Total 1918 miles, 10 days, break-in service done by a dealership by the Ring which costs $300 Euros.

Going solo allows you to move fast and enjoy yourself, not to mention meet some very interesting people along the way. Enjoy yourself, it is an experience of a lifetime.

As far as driving the Ring, I never used the xbox, but I've got track expereince in the states, so if you don't take it easy and enjoy the view. The Ring was by far the most enjoyable but frighten track I've ever driven.

A lap of mine

Yeah the Luftansa isn't the best bargain, but it's tourist season so if you are going in the summer most other airlines are about the same price. Depends when you look for tickets, most charge about 900-1000 for one ticket. I paid $1900 for 2 tickets... so it really wasn't far off. It pretty much evened out.

I'm doing Munich (1.5 days) --> Fussen (1.5 days) --> Innsbruck (1.5 days) --> Munich (1.5 days).

Def dropping the car off in Munich was high priority... I want my car ASAP and to enjoy SOME of the summer that is left over.

2.5 weeks till I leave... horrible wait...euro tease... then wait some more.

I"ve been on the fence about going to Salzburg for weeks... I would get a nice drive from Innsbruck through the Alps to Salzburg, but I couldn't find anything really interesting to do there other than eat out and just walk around... which is what i'm doing in Innsbruck anyways...

Just places to consider.

You can do delivery, museum, and factory tour in one day without much issue. We even had time to visit Dachau concentration camp afterwards and back to Welt for dinner.

Thanks to all for the information and ideas, keep 'em coming.

I'll be picking mine up on July 5th but haven't even purchased plane tickets, let alone plan a real itinerary yet.

OP: The ED packet BMW sends you will have the drop-off location info.

After checking into it, in addition to the 'ring, I would like to try and include a drive through the Stelvio Pass...Thanks DaveM3fan

It seems that there is just not enough time to fit in all that awaits us.

Hey--we have our ED next week and decided on a route from Fussen along the German Alpenstrasse. We are in Salzburg for 3 nights and are going to spend one full day hiking around Konigsee in the Berchtesgaden area. Check out this link for Ramsau. There is also a nice driving loop around the park area and of course a down the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

I'm thinking Salzburg will be nice at night roaming around for dinner and for one day seeing the sites...otherwise we are going to avoid the crowds and get out and hike the alps....I'll report back.

Three M3post members picking up on the same day? Crazy! Mark or Jason should make this a Bimmerpost cover story.

My appt. is at 7:30am and I'll probably do the factory tour and check the museum.

PicassoM: nice colour selection, looking forward to seeing it.

slowman: Welcome here. Cheers to the 7/5 collective.

Yes it is Chris, about a 20 minute drive from the Welt to there, maybe 15 if you take the highway versus the suburban route (which is better because you pass a whole bunch of BMW facilities, neat to see if you're into that kind of stuff).

I am scheduled to pickup my car late July and I am trying to arrange a visit to the M Division. I called BMW Special Sales at BMW NA (800) 932-0831 and they told me that it could be arranged.
