exhaust tips cleaning?

hi,
how do i keep the black dense film from forming on my exhaust tips...how do i get it off, tried soap and water, but its on pretty good.

Best way to keep them clean is prevention. Wash the exhaust tips each and every time you wash the car. I use a 3" foam paint brush (wooden handle, to avoid scratching) - it allows me to reach the parts of the exhaust tips that otherwise would be hard to gain access to, and they fit perfectly in the inner part of the tips.
If they are already soiled, P21S Polishing soap, or Autoglym Metal polish work fantastically well for me. If they are VERY sooted up on the inside, you can use 0000 steel wool.
Throwing a coat of a good polymer wax will also help to keep them clean.

great thanks, i am having trouble finding some of those things locally thjough, but i will look around.

I used never dull in the little silver tin. A small piece of that stuff worked awesome - even got the inside of the pipe shiny!

I just wash them every time I wash the car which is about once a week and then about once a month I use Adam's two-stage metal polish to keep the inside and outside nice and shiny.

In case you were referring 'how', not what product, just put product on a rag, slip it between the tips, and go up and down like if you were shining your shoes. Then do same with microfiber (sprayed with water to damp it a hair) to remove residue. Hope this helps.

+1 on Neverdull...always reminds me of shining the drill sergeants door knob to his office when I was a Private in basic training....

I've always wondered about the utility of waxing an exhaust tip. Exhaust tips on our cars will regularly get from 400-600 °F depending on how hard you drive. Pure Carnuaba melts at a very high temperature (for a wax) at about 180-190 °F. By 540 °F is at its flash point. I'd never bother waxing an exhaust tip based on that.
