When you take it in to the 1200mi service, they will look at your black box and see that you went over 5500 rpm. They will program the ECU into self-destruct mode and your car will explode at 5500 miles.

"No soup for you!"

Seriously, before this thread self destructs, you should be fine unless your dealer decides to become pissy about this later on if something needs to be covered under warranty. Don't sweat it.

Oh boy - take it to another dealership, perhaps GM. They don't have the same computer BMW does.

It feels TOTALLY different when you get up in the RPM band. Don't worry about the "overrevs" in the 6000rpm range. BMW will likely be more picky about the times you'll hit 8700 or so. (I need to be more careful in low gears!)

There is no black box in manual transmission cars so if you have a 6MT, no need to worry. If you have DTC, they can look at your history.

Hmm, that's the first I've heard of that. I thought that data was saved in several places, including your key fob, whether you have M-DCT or a manual six speed. I'll have to check up on that with my sources. Until then, I don't believe it.

there has always been a lot of talk about the "1200 mile service" and making sure you keep under a certain rpm until the engine is broken in... but in my experience, it seems like the dealerships dont really care. i dont know maybe i am wrong, but its just that my sales people never mention anything about keeping the rpms low until a certain point and when i ask, they shake their heads and say not to worry about it.

i kept rpms below 5500 anyways until 1200mi service, but i dont know, a lot of members say its super important but the dealerships seem not to care..

i guess what i am saying is that you shouldnt get anywhere close to the redline, but if you go a tad over, its probably not an issue.
