Dyno of Fabspeed cats, X-pipe, and ECU tune

Hi guys,

Just picked up my car, 2009 E90, from Fabspeed. They installed their high flow 200 cell cats (HQ German units that do not code), Xpipe with resonators, and custom dyno tuned ECU. I already had the Active Autowerks pulley and air filter. Stock mufflers. 93 octane pump gas. 1600 miles on the motor.

The car baselined at 350 rwhp. After the work, it dynoed at 383 rwhp. Plus there is a massive torque increase under the curve.

Unfortunately, it is raining today and I was unable to test her out. I can say that it is really really responsive and it took a lot of willpower to not tempt fate. LOL It definately sounds much healthier but not really any louder in normal cruising. Maybe a db or so.... But, when you floor it, it barks.

Next week my Eisenmann Sport shows up to complete the package.

Thanks! Yes... What do you know about PES? I do know that Fabspeed and PES are close to each other and that Fabspeed does dyno tune the ECU in collaboration with PES. I did not witness the dyno tuning though. I would have liked that.

My car was the first to get the 200 cell cats and X pipe. They have not finalized a retail price for that. However, the number being discussed is less than AA cats/xpipe for instance. And that is with the HJS high quality cats.

I believe they get around $625 for just the Xpipe.

Unfortunately for you, I am very close to the city..... Philadelphia that is!

You are more than welcome to check the car out. I'll be installing the Eisenmann Sport in a week or two when it arrives.

Yea, they're doing a custom tune on their dyno. To me this is far better than packing up your ECU and sending out for a generic tune.

Is this a true X pipe?... looks like a stamped H pipe similar to the factory design and Encore's Design..

X pipes have sharp inside edges.... these look like a commercially stamped design incorporated into an exhaust system (notice the welds before and after the 'H) meaning it would not have the same "extraction" affect of a true X pipe... and is obviously much cheaper to make...

btw, a 200 cell cat is freer than our 300 cell cat ( only makes sense, cells per square inch ) means it should easily turn on the CEL. The "High Quality" portion is misleading since we certainly arent using "low quality" being ours are 300 cell.

Interesting read from quick google search:

Both the H-pipe and the X-pipe allow both sides of the exhaust piping to be used to move exhaust gasses out of the way of the next set of exhaust gasses.

The American V8s all have 90 degree crankshafts (also known as 360 degree CS). This gives rise to the burble of the american v8s. This crankshaft arrangement gives better secondary balance in the engine and leads to smoothness; but results in an uneven firing order and exhaust order LRLLRLRR.

THe H-pipe and the X-pipe allow the doubled up pulses to utilize the 'other' pipe for smooth exhaust performance and lower back pressure. The H-pipe only works in the lower RPM range and effectively turns off when the RPMs get above a certain point. The X-pipe does not have a high RPM cutoff point and works across the whole RPM band.
Quote:
H-Pipes are cheaper to make so factories make the cheapest possible. Since exhaust gages don't really like to make Right and Left turns, H pipes don't work as well as x-pipes. When exhaust gases pass over the x-pipe the crossing over effect aids in scavenging the combustion chambers of exhaust gases. Which aids in the filling velocieties of the incomming charge, ie better performance. It's nothing great ,but it does increase torque, and HP.

Omar, I do appreciate the help you have given me and I want to be clear that I was an inch away from getting your complete setup, until I found out about the coding. I can say that Fabspeed has huge experience with Bosch DME and exotic cars. They use really expensive German made cats. They have never had a code. They both guaranteed it to me, as well as being local I can turn off the rear sensor if need be with just a 30 minute drive. This was the deal sealer. I refused to have to R&R the ECU to take care of OBD issues.

I will certainly keep everyone updated regarding any coding.

The numbers from the Xpipe look very good. They have other cars they have done and I would not call their work or design inferior in any way. I am not sure you are looking at the same X piece if you would call that an "H"! It is a very smooth X. Clearly not a 90 degree H.

Looks like an X to me. Not that your system is not beautiful, but your price is outrageous and you must tune the ECU for yours to not get a code. The difference between the X you see pictured here and the X in your design can only be minimal at best (if at all).

I'm also curious about your cats being high quality. I've asked numerous times for more info on them. CFM comparisons mainly or if they are a ceramic or metal matrix cat. I've never gotten answers on either. How come yours produce codes?

Omar - Not that what you're saying is incorrect, but does it matter? The results show that regardless of it being a "true" X-pipe, it is quite effective.

J08M3,

The cat has a CFM of 578 and is metallic. We have tested both 200 cell and 300 cell cats which both produce codes on the E46 M3 and E9X M3, same goes for SS HFC.
