How difficult would it be for BMW to fit the 4.4 liter twin turbo V8

into the M3? With 444 ft/lbs it should be the answer to all the torque complaints. I know they have a bundle of R&D in the high RPM stock engine and may not want to lose face with such a quick switch but it sounds super and with direct injection we could see a needed improvement in mileage to boot.

It is the engine in the M3 that makes the car what it is... and most of the folks that knock it for not having "enough" torque don't own one, and probably have never driven one. The car, as is out of the box, is awesome... the polar opposite of your 545.

I've owned a 545 and then a 550. Both of those cars are overweight, numb handling barges by comparison... the 545 engine gasps for air over 4000 rpm, and if it has that god aweful active steering...

You can not possibly explore the M car's limits on the public roads. Why would you possibly want to give up that butter smooth engine for turbo lag?

Drive an M3 for a week before suggesting such nonsense.

I have to agree with the first couple of replies. It will be a very sad day for me when the first F/I M3 rolls off the factory floor.

Garage List
i would reserve judgement till you drive a 4.4 turbo
all the M faithful said the same thing about our V8 when it came out
how dare they ruin the M3 with a big heavy V8 etc
and we know how good our engine is
i am sure the 4.4TT is damn good
and i am sure it would rock a lot more in an E92

If youre convinced as such then how often do you track your car to realise its full potential?

Just curious..

He's not saying he's explored the limits on a track, he's just saying you can't take advantage of its full potential on the street. Safely anyway.

Anyway, I too also hope the M's stay N/A!!

That having been said, my car is just that... my car. I don't race it. It goes to school, the office, little league and swim practice.

Push the car hard in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and you are into triple digits... Punch it in 4th while driving 70 down the highway and you are at warp speed... immediately. Anyone who owns one knows the car is very fast if driven that way.

The cool thing is you can drive it calmly and it is an beautifully balanced ride.

We live near Limerock, and I do plan to take it to the track for a conservative fun day this summer.

I've driven the 335 and a 335 with all the DINAN mods. Not for me.

punching it in 4th is amazing.....I would concur with your assessment above.

First off, the M3 would have a lot of trouble putting that kind of power down. Second, I doubt the TT V8 you're speaking of is anywhere near as light and tidy as the S65. And then there's the turbo lag, you'll have to beef up the drivetrain to handle the extra torque... the list goes on.

Edit: Also, even with direct injection, a twin-turbo v8 would not achieve "good" mileage.

I wouldn't be so dismissive of the turbo V8. Road and Track has the new X5M and X6M output at 547 hp. The same motor will probably be put in the new M5. BMW may put a slightly detuned version in the next generation M3. Kinda like what the Merc boys do with the E63 and C63. Bye the way, my wife's new 750li turbo arrives in the US Wednesday.

Some people will like it, while others will hate it. We are all just numbers and any car manufacturer will change the make-up of one model car for profit. As one reply mentioned: Drive (or better, own) the new M3 and let is know if the torque is inadequate.

One of the reasons BMW developed the V8 as a lightweight low inertia high rev engine is because its the best format to go with a DCT.

How would anyone on this board know how difficult it would be to put the 4.4 in the M3?

Apparently you havnt seen some of the awesome thats pulled off by some of the members/sponsors here.

And why are so many of you acting like you a 4.4 TT V8 in a M3 is such a horrid idea. It may feel a bit different them the engine you have now but seriously...

If I was given a choice between a 420hp/295lb.ft. V8 and a 550hp/447lb.ft. Twin Turbo V8, take a wild guess which one I would be smoking you in, on a track or a straight
