Yes, finalization of coding to make this a true PnP package which continues tomorrow.

Also - we've just made the move to a new larger facility

Outstanding. Will place my order once I get back from travel out of town...no time otherwise till them. Technic did you have problems getting the trim out of the car and with removal of the CCC? Were you provided step by step instructions removing trim and unplugging the old CCC and removing the screen or was this a skill you already had?

Everything was done DIY... there are plenty of DIY threads in this forum on how to remove the trim and the CCC: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=454413

I'm likely buying a used M3 next spring. I had pretty much eliminated 2008MY's from consideration due to the I-drive. Is this upgrade easy enough and P-n-P enough that I should widen my search to include low milage 2008's? How much of a savings would a 2008 need to have to make it worth while? i.e. if a 2008 and 2009 are the same price and mileage its a no brainer to go for the 2009. If the 2008 is 10K cheaper than I'd guess its worth it to go for the 2008. The parts will cost 2500USD or more so I guess the difference would have to be significantly more than that to make it worthwhile, but how much more for the hassle is what I'm trying to decide.

If you cannot determine on your own how much of a hassle this iDrive swap is, after reading this thread and the link that I posted just above you own post, then you better get a 2009.

This DIY is not for you.

How can you say it's not for me. You don't have any knowledge about my DIY skills. I did look at all your posts and from what I gathered you pieced together your solution from used parts, etc and you yourself said it cost much more than it had to. I'm trying to get an informed opinion from people who have actually done the swap. Hopefully from people who have also done one of the turnkey solutions. If you were in my shoes and you could buy a 2009 or a 2008 how much of a price difference would it take to get you to DIY? Also how long of an install is it with the turnkey solution? It looks like about 2-4hrs for the hardware portion, but I'm uncertain about the time spent to update the software. One of the vendors made it sound like some of this could be done with a laptop at home I'm guessing that could take many hours.

Just because you asked I can categorically say that it is not for you. iDrive swaps are perfect for current owners to avoid the double hit of depreciation and the new M3 price, not for potential customers looking for their perfect used M3.

This is not to argue. I did the swap and it is fundamentally the same as the only turnkey solution out there right now; actually my installation/coding was the basis of the turnkey solution. That's the reason I spent more money that ultimately was not necessary. The only used part in my swap was the screen, everything else was brand new.

If you look again at my thread the major issue that you will have with this swap is the inability to update any software in your 2008 M3 without removing first the CIC/screen/controller. Which means that you will never be able to update the iDrive software from what it will have up to that moment. Then you will have an issue with getting the Assist MyInfo and BMW Search features, depending on the production date of the 2008 that you get (GSM vs CDMA TCU) and that you need dealer support to special request to Assist to make your account a MY2009 instead of a MY2008 to receive Google messages. Good luck with that request. To me, having the new iDrive without MyInfo or BMW Search takes away most of the main reasons of making the swap.

Right now, if you shop wisely, you should be able to get a MY2011 M3, close to invoice at 0.9% rate, that if you combine it with the Select Program you should end up paying a month very close to what you will end up paying for an used M3 a month. And you will have the latest iDrive with a new M3.

Curious of the EAS turnkey will address any of those issues you mentioned. My 2008 idrive is killing me - the resolution is miserable.

The car/CIC update issue cannot be solved unless a process is developed that allows the individual programming -very different from coding- of modules. And that's not possible right now; it is all the modules or no modules at all.

And even if that process existed it is not guaranteed to work, as it will not be factory developed or tested.

The Assist integration (MyInfo and BMW Search) will depend on the TCU hardware and the willingness of both your dealer and Assist to work with you.

This is precisely the information I was looking for. The internet doesn't convey some things very well. I thought you were questioning my DIY skills, but in fact your were just giving me the short and sweet version of this answer. Thank you for saving me the grief

I don't think you realize how much new M3's are up here in Canada. The base price for a sedan is 70K and for one that is nicely optioned it is about 82-85K. With taxes, PDI, and limited deals at stealerships the total gets above 90K very easily. Unfortunately BMW won't allow US dealers to sell new cars to Canadians, so that's why I'm shopping for used. A nicely optioned 2009 E90 M3 is selling for 50-55k which will end up costing me 62-67K Canadian after duties and taxes. 2008's are selling for 5-10k less and there about 4-5x as many available, but I don't want the old Idrive (that's why I was interested in this thread) I can likely get Wife's approval for 60-70k, but not likely for 90-100k.

Price difference when I bought my car was over $10k b/w a new 2008 and 2009, so I ultimately went with the 2008. Another advantage to going with a 2009 though, is that sometimes the bugs in the first model year are worked out in the second. I had a huge ordeal with the speakers emitting an audible whine for six months before BMW finally fixed it. Not sure if it was limited to 2008 vehicles, but it was certainly annoying. Had an EDC module that needed to be replaced too. Just a few things to consider beyond the updated idrive.

My car was completed 1/7/2011. Here's the link to my retrofit. Works flawlessly. Thanks Patryk and Technic!
