Cool [DIY E92 M3] High-Power White Angel-Eye Lamp

Hello, M3 Fighter Pilots!!

I made "High-Power LED White Angel-Eye" for my E92 M3 Coupe. So, I introduce it to you.

This is a comparison between a genuine H8 halogen lamp and my work.

This is the inside of genuine head-lamp unit.

The "Inner Angel Ring" has a reflector, but the "Outer Angel Ring" has not. It has the "Optical Glass Pipe" which leads the ray from the light source.

So, it becomes important that where is the position of the light source.

This is "Luxeon K2 with TFFC Cool White" (LXK2-PWC4-0180) which I used.

It has 250 Lumen at max current 1,500mA (3.85V).

This is a genuine H8 halogen lamp made by OSRAM.

Take it apart to the bulb and the base by milling machine.

This is the base.

It has two small pins in the inside. These are + and - from the H8 wiring.

The aluminum bar (diameter 15mm) just fits to the base.

Mill and plane the aluminum bar by milling machine.

This milling machine has the precision of 0.02mm pitch.

These are after milling and planing.

Combine the materials.

This is a comparison between a genuine H8 halogen lamp and my work.

It has same distance between the filament and the base.
(In this image, it looks different because of its putting angle, but it has just same distance(34mm).)

It is only coupler-on to the H8 wiring, not needs cutting or other processing.

This is a case when the light source is not adjusted to the "Optical Glass Pipe".

It is often seen at several maker's products.

This is my work adjusted to the "Optical Glass Pipe".

More details, please see here.
(Sorry, it is written in Japanese. Use Altavista or others.)

Does anyone fight (compare) about the brightness of the Angel-Eye?

Quote:

This is "High-Power LED White Angel-Eye" for E60/E61 that I had made 4 years ago.

One of the maker produced a product after a half year that I had made.

This is a comparison with one of the maker's product.

Which one do you look brighter?

This clearly shows the difference between two models.
(Characteristic of the polar radiation pattern)

Refer here and here.

Smile Too much of one thing is not good.

Hello, kmarei.

It is not good thing that it has a lot of LEDs in case of the Angel-Eye.

The important thing is that where is the position of the light source and how to lead the ray to the "Outer Angel Ring" through the "Optical Glass Pipe".

That product has a lot of SMD LEDs, but it seems that it has not enough amount of light.

LED light travel much straighter than an incandescent light source, so like SOARISTO said, you really need to position the LEDs well to match up with the light tubes so that the rings will light up properly. I wonder how bright are these under direct sunlight.

This is under the sunlight in the shade. It has almost the same brightness as the genuine halogen lamp.
(Under the direct sunlight, even though the genuine halogen lamp looks dark.)

i wonder if we can make a setup with 4 bulbs with say 3 inch wires
so you can pace a bulb at the tip of each ring
so the outer ring would be lit up as well as the inner ring

The only problem with this is.... when you turn the headlights on then the voltage drops and it is too low for the power regulator to handle, so it throws it out of its recomended voltage. Doing so it cuts down the power to the LED and makes it much dimmer. Have you tried to use this setup when the headlights are on also?

Here is other solution.
This way I did the LED angel-eye lighting in my MY09 M3.
The LEDs are placed in correct position.
But, it is a little difficult to install.

That BREX piece looks pretty interesting. Does it eliminate the H8 bulb all together? How is the brightness?
