1200 mile service question

Once I hit the magical 1200 mark can I go ahead and just unleash the car, or should I make sure that I have the service first....I may not be able to get my car in until later next week, but I'll be at 1200 miles in the next couple of days. Thanks!

Just got the car serviced 2 days ago with 1186 miles...

first time today i went WOT through first 2 gears and backed off in the middle of 3rd, all i can say is its amazing. It just begs for more....be careful lol

Aren't you supposed to break it in until 3000 miles? It seems like most just hammer on it after the 12000 service.

It says nothing in the manual about needing service first. The point of the break-in period is to allow the major stressed components to wear quickly into their desired tolerances (piston rings, bearings, gear meshing, etc). That produces a lot of byproducts that get into your oil, which is why they want to change it so quickly.

I would not drive it for very long with getting that service however, mainly because it's on your record.

Truth beknown, I was on the track (though not pushing it) the second it hit 1200 miles (in fact I think it rolled over to 1200 on the track). I didn't want the ECU to record a 8300rpm shift with less mileage that that on the car.

From what I have been told by technicians trained to service M cars (dad's buddy is a BMW service engineer in Hong Kong), BMW seems to use a special brake in oil / transmission fluid for the all the M cars. It is supposedly specially formulated for brake in purpose only. It should be replaced with regular oil / fluid before you push the car to its limits.

I would definitely say service first, that's what I've done on all my previous bmws and what I will do when I get the M3, it's silly to risk it otherwise IMHO.

We're getting our M3 DCT in 17 days on March 1st to get the new 09 uk reg. We're then getting married on Friday and going on honeymoon in the car on Monday so we've not got much time to get the service done.

We're planning on getting the 1200 miles done on the Sunday and Monday, get road pilot and laser park fitted on Tuesday, run in service on Wednesday, drive to hotel Thursday, get married Friday!

It's going to be a busy week!

Yes, break in is until 3100 miles. After 1200 miles you are supposed to stay below 136mph, and only go to max speed for short periods of time. I don't know if there are any RPM restrictions, but it definitely says to gradually increase RPM and speed after 1200. You're not supposed to take it from the dealer at 1200 and romp on it with WOT.

Look in the upper left hand corner of the front window. There is a sticker with the break-in periods, though it doesn't say anything about service though my dealer told me about the servicing at 1200 miles many times before I ever got into the car.
